Progress in high performance membrane materials and processes for biogas production, upgrading and conversion

Summary: Biogas is a reliable renewable resource and energy carrier with growing potential. The use of membranes for biogas valorization has attracted attention and advancements are being made in materials and processes. This review analyzes the extensive work done at different scales in relation to membrane separation processes for biogas. The discussions cover various membrane materials, processes, and configurations used in the entire value chain of biogas production, upgrading, and conversion. Guidelines for designing high-performance membrane systems are provided, taking into account economic considerations.

Effect of incorporating different ZIF-8 crystal sizes in the polymer of intrinsic microporosity, PIM-1, for CO2/CH4 separation

Summary: In this study, Zeolitic Imidazole Frameworks (ZIF-8) crystals of different sizes were synthesized and incorporated into the polymer of intrinsic microporosity, PIM-1, to form mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for effective CO2/CH4 separation. Characterization of MMMs showed that ZIF-8 crystal size greatly influenced gas transport properties, with membranes containing 120 nm ZIF-8 crystals showing the greatest improvement. Aging of the membranes resulted in increased selectivity and decreased permeability, indicating enhanced polymer packing and diffusivity selectivity.

Post-modification of PIM-1 and simultaneously in situ synthesis of porous polymer networks into PIM-1 matrix to enhance CO2 separation performance

Summary: Post-modification of the chemical structures of PIM-1 using methane sulfonic acid (MSA) can enhance the gas separation performance of PIM-1 membranes by improving gas pair selectivity and permeability. This method involves hydrolysis, crosslinking, and in situ synthesis of porous polymer networks (PPNs) in a one-step process, resulting in membranes with excellent CO2 separation properties.

Effect of porous organic polymers in gas separation properties of polycarbonate based mixed matrix membranes

Summary: Polycarbonate (PC) based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) loaded with porous organic polymers as fillers demonstrate excellent gas separation performance, with increased gas permeability coefficients and maintained or improved selectivity. MMMs prepared by controlled addition of fillers under ultrasound stirring and magnetic stirring sequences show time-saving advantages compared to traditional methods. The use of different functionalized fillers enhances gas permeability and separation selectivity in various gas pairs.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent applications of cellulose and cellulose derivatives as CO2 adsorbents and membranes. Nanocellulose materials such as cellulose nanofibrils and nanocrystals exhibit large surface areas and hydroxyl groups, enabling them to be effective in CO2 separation. By incorporating inorganic fillers, the CO2 adsorption performance can be further enhanced.

The post-covalent modification strategy effectively eliminated interface defects and improved compatibility between the polymer matrix and filler particles, resulting in excellent gas separation performance in the MMMs.
