Assessment of the ameliorative effect of curcumin on pendimethalin-induced genetic and biochemical toxicity

Ali Acar et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the toxic effects of pendimethalin herbicide and the protective role of curcumin using the Allium test. Pendimethalin treatment reduced rooting percentage, root length, growth rate, and weight gain while inducing chromosomal abnormalities and DNA damage in roots of A. cepa L. However, a dose-dependent reduction in pendimethalin toxicity was observed when curcumin was added, with maximum recovery seen at 10 mg/L concentration.

Detection and identification of hazardous organic pollutants from distillery wastewater by GC-MS analysis and its phytotoxicity and genotoxicity evaluation by using Allium cepa and Cicer arietinum L.

Pankaj Chowdhary et al.

Summary: The distillery industry generates wastewater with high concentrations of organic and inorganic pollutants. This study analyzed the pollution parameters and the occurrence of toxic and genotoxic pollutants in the wastewater. The results showed that the wastewater had high levels of BOD, COD, TS, and phosphate, and alkaline pH. Phytotoxic and genotoxic effects were observed in plants and cells exposed to the wastewater.

Spectroscopic contribution to glyphosate toxicity profile and the remedial effects of Momordica charantia

Emine Yalcin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity of glyphosate and the protective effects of bitter melon extract (Bmex) in Allium cepa test material. The results showed that glyphosate caused various toxic effects on A. cepa, including decreased physiological parameters and increased cytogenetic and biochemical parameters as well as anatomical damage. However, co-administration of Bmex reduced the toxicity of glyphosate and improved all examined parameters significantly.

Toxicity assessment of potassium bromate and the remedial role of grape seed extract

Emine Yalcin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of potassium bromate on Allium cepa L. and tested the reducing effects of grape seed extract (GSE). The results showed that potassium bromate exposure caused decreases in physiological parameters and abnormalities in cell genetic indicators, disrupting the antioxidant/oxidant balance. GSE administration reduced the toxic effects of potassium bromate and improved the examined parameters.

Risk assessment of oxidative stress and multiple toxicity induced by Etoxazole

Oksal Macar et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxic effects of Etoxazole on Allium cepa L. The results showed that higher doses of Etoxazole led to more significant growth and genotoxic damage. The findings highlight the high risk and potential harm of Etoxazole to non-target organisms.

Acute multiple toxic effects of Trifloxystrobin fungicide on Allium cepa L.

Oksal Macar et al.

Summary: This study assesses the susceptibility of Allium cepa to trifloxystrobin and finds that it has toxic effects on the plant's physiology, cytogenetics, biochemistry, and anatomy. Trifloxystrobin inhibits the growth of the onion, induces chromosomal abnormalities and micronucleus formation, and negatively impacts cellular structure and biochemical processes. These toxic effects are dose-dependent.

Assessment of the biological effect of metal ions and their complexes using Allium cepa and Artemia salina assays: a possible environmental implementation of biological inorganic chemistry

Chrysoula S. Tzima et al.

Summary: The pollution of aquatic ecosystems due to the elevated concentration of various contaminants, such as metal ions, poses a threat to human survival and health. The exposure to heavy metal ions can cause severe chronic diseases and cancer. The detection of these contaminants is mainly based on physicochemical analysis, but it may not be effective in some cases due to their complex nature. Developing biological models can provide more insights into the effects of metal ions.
