In vitro elicitation and detection of apigenin, catalpol and gallic acid in hairy root culture of Plantago major L. and assessment of cytotoxicity and anti-bacterial activity of its methanolic extract

Summary: This study successfully established the hairy root culture of Plantago major and evaluated the accumulation of apigenin, catalpol, and gallic acid. The methanolic extracts of the hairy roots showed significant antibacterial activity against Proteus vulgaris and cytotoxicity on SW-480 cells.

Mapping the purple menace: spatiotemporal distribution of purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) along roadsides in northern New York State

Summary: The study aimed to identify the extent of infestations and investigate the factors promoting the spread of purple loosestrife in wetlands. The results showed a significant increase in the number of plants along state highways, with a higher loosestrife density correlating with an increase in plant species richness and a decrease in the distance to the closest infestation and wetland. Mowing was not found to promote the spread, while culverts were identified as enabling the spread of purple loosestrife underneath highways.

Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated hairy root transformation as an efficient system for gene function analysis in Litchi chinensis

Summary: In this study, a rapid and efficient transformation system using A. rhizogenes strain MSU440 was established for gene function analysis in litchi hairy roots by optimizing parameters. The system was successfully used to study the function of the key anthocyanin regulatory gene LcMYB1 in litchi, showing higher contents of anthocyanins, proanthocyanins, and flavonols in the over-expressed LcMYB1 hairy roots.

Summary: This study evaluates the eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Lythrum salicaria extracts, showcasing their potential applications as antimicrobial agents, selective cytotoxic agents towards cancer cell lines, and catalysts for pollutant degradation. The extracts demonstrated high phenolic content and flavone C-glucosides, while the synthesized AgNPs displayed growth inhibition of bacteria and fungi, antioxidant potential, and selective cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines. Additionally, the extracts showed effectiveness in catalytic degradation of pollutants like Congo red and 4-nitrophenol.
