Sink or Source: Alternative Roles of Glacier Foreland Meadow Soils in Methane Emission Is Regulated by Glacier Melting on the Tibetan Plateau

Tingting Xing et al.

Summary: Glacier foreland soils change from a methane sink to a methane source under the impact of glacial meltwater. The extent of methane flux depends on the activities of methanogenic archaea and methanotrophic bacteria. pH is dominant for methanogens, while both pH and moisture are not that strong for methanotrophs.

When anaerobes encounter oxygen: mechanisms of oxygen toxicity, tolerance and defence

Zheng Lu et al.

Summary: Anaerobic bacteria have the capability to tolerate significant levels of oxygen and experience episodic oxygenation in hypoxic environments. Studies have shown that these organisms possess similar defense mechanisms to aerobes, allowing them to withstand oxygen exposure. The emergent view suggests that anaerobes have evolved tactics to minimize the impact of oxygen on their metabolism or quickly restore function after oxidative stress has dissipated.
