EHRA expert consensus document on the management of arrhythmias in frailty syndrome, endorsed by the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS), Latin America Heart Rhythm Society (LAHRS), and Cardiac Arrhythmia Society of Southern Africa (CASSA)

Irina Savelieva et al.

Summary: There is a growing population of elderly individuals with chronic diseases, multi-morbidity, and disabilities. Frailty syndrome becomes more prevalent with age and is associated with various negative outcomes. Despite the high occurrence of cardiac arrhythmias in the elderly and frail population, there is a lack of studies and recommendations for their management, resulting in slow uptake of effective antiarrhythmic therapies. This consensus document aims to provide guidance for managing arrhythmias in frail patients and identifies areas for further research.

Catheter ablation or medical therapy to delay progression of atrial fibrillation: the randomized controlled atrial fibrillation progression trial (ATTEST)

Karl-Heinz Kuck et al.

Summary: The study indicates that radiofrequency ablation is more effective than antiarrhythmic drug therapy in delaying the progression from paroxysmal to persistent atrial fibrillation. Patients aged 65 and above may have an increased risk of progressing to persistent atrial fibrillation.
