Compressive solitary waves in black phosphorene

I. A. Shepelev et al.

Summary: The dynamics of compressive solitons in single-layer phosphorene are analyzed using molecular dynamics, and the mechanisms of energy dissipation in the lattice are studied. The damping of compressive solitons in phosphorene is found to be stronger than in graphene and boron nitride due to its puckered structure, providing more channels for energy dissipation.

The frequency spectrum of rotobreathers with many degrees of freedom

Alexander Savin et al.

Summary: The influence of internal degrees of freedom on the rotational frequencies of rotobreathers is discussed in this paper using two models. The results show that additional degrees of freedom create forbidden frequency bands for rotobreathers. In the case of a carbon nanotube crystal, the frequency spectrum of a rotobreather has a complex structure resembling a Cantor set.

Shock-induced plasticity and phase transformation in single crystal magnesium: an interatomic potential and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations

Zhiyong Jian et al.

Summary: An effective and reliable approach for simulating the plasticity and phase transition of magnesium single crystals under high-pressure shock loading has been developed. Different shock orientations exhibit different shock profiles, and the anisotropy diminishes with increasing shock strength. Amorphization and reorientation play important roles in the phase transition, and the phase transition pathway involves various strain and stress processes. The formation of product phases and the stability of crystal structures are related to the concentration of shear stress.

Negative Thermal Expansion of Carbon Nanotube Bundles

Leysan Kh Galiakhmetova et al.

Summary: Aligned carbon nanotube bundles exhibit negative lateral thermal expansion under lateral loading and heating conditions. The coefficient of thermal expansion is practically constant up to 1500 K and does not depend on biaxial lateral compression. This anomalous behavior is explained by the elliptization of the CNT cross section and bending of the CNT walls by thermal fluctuations.

Computational Analysis of Strain-Induced Effects on the Dynamic Properties of C60 in Fullerite

Aleksandr Lun-Fu et al.

Summary: This study uses a hybrid discrete-continuous physical and mathematical model to investigate the deformation characteristics that cause the rolling effect of C-60 fullerene in a fullerite crystal. The interaction between fullerene atoms and surrounding molecules is described using a centrally symmetric interaction potential, where the surrounding molecules are considered as a spherical surface with uniformly distributed carbon atoms. The rotational motion of the fullerene is described by the Euler dynamic equations. The numerical study presents the results of the influence of strain rate, magnitude, and direction on the dynamic characteristics of the rotational and translational motion of C-60 fullerene in a crystalline fragment.

Flip effect of carbon nanotori

Aleksandr Lun-Fu et al.

Summary: The interaction between two molecular oscillating tori is theoretically investigated using classical molecular dynamics methods. The study finds that a group of carbon nanotori located near each other experiences a collective flip effect similar to the Dzhanibekov effect. The influence of intermolecular interaction and the initial conditions of dynamics on motion and flip effect (pi-rotation) of the system of two nanotori is examined, and the conditions leading to unstable motion due to the flip effect are discussed.

Mechanical Properties of Cubene Crystals

Leysan Kh Galiakhmetova et al.

Summary: This study presents the first description of two fullerites based on cubenes, one belonging to the cubic system and the other to the triclinic system. The results show that the cubic phase is metastable, while the triclinic phase is likely the ground state crystalline phase. These findings are significant for studying the physical and mechanical properties of C-8 fullerite.

Discrete magnetic breathers in monoaxial chiral helimagnet

I. G. Bostrem et al.

Summary: Spatially localized breather excitations are analyzed for a model of a discrete Heisenberg spin chain, which includes the antisymmetric exchange interaction and single-ion anisotropy of the easy-plane type. The breather modes may be indexed by the number of embedded kink-antikink pairs forming the regular breather lattice in a finite size chain. The influence of the antisymmetric exchange on properties of the discrete breather modes is examined.

Summary: This study examines the supramolecular interaction of carbon nanotori in a columnar phase using classical molecular dynamics methods. It explores the collective behavior and dynamic properties of toroidal molecules under van der Waals forces, investigating the instability and rearrangement of columnar structures based on molecular tori. The appearance of two types of directed rotational motion from chaotic molecular motion is also discussed.

Experimental validation for the quasi-shear wave behavior of LiF single crystal along a low-symmetry orientation under uniaxial shock loading

Qiancheng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, LiF single crystals were shocked compressed along the [310] orientation to investigate the behavior of anisotropic solids under dynamic deformation beyond the Hugoniot elastic limit. Three-wave structures were observed in the material under different peak normal stresses, indicating a transition from elastoplastic two-wave to anomalous three-wave structures.

Negative thermal expansion in the Ruddlesden-Popper calcium titanates

Nathan Z. Koocher et al.

Summary: Materials exhibiting negative thermal expansion are crucial for microelectronic devices and optical systems. We studied the quasi-2D characteristics and thermal expansion of Can+1TinO3n+1 family with density-functional-theory calculations and the self-consistent quasiharmonic approximation method. The NTE trend with layer number in orthorhombic materials was found to be affected by the elastic moduli and the NTE capacity, which decreases monotonically with increasing n.

Uniaxial negative thermal expansion behavior of β-CuSCN

Jiaqi Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the NTE mechanism of beta-CuSCN through various techniques, finding that rotations of S-C equivalent to N-Cu chains and collective motions of atoms played a significant role in the NTE along the c-axis. However, translational and librational motions of C equivalent to N units had a minor contribution to the NTE, distinguishing it from other known NTE mechanisms like cyanides and Prussian blue.

Dark discrete breather modes in a monoaxial chiral helimagnet with easy-plane anisotropy

I. G. Bostrem et al.

Summary: The emergence of discrete breather excitations in CrNb3S6 is attributed to nonlinearity and discreteness, due to the compound's specific domain structure. The breather modes in this material appear as discrete breather lattice solutions with periods mismatching the system size, and are controlled by the easy-plane single-ion anisotropy intrinsic to the material, with frequencies lying within the linear spin-wave band.

Rotobreathers in a chain of coupled elastic rotators

Alexander Savin et al.

Summary: The paper analyzes rotorbreathers in a chain of coupled linear elastic rotators and finds that the frequency of angular rotation of rotorbreathers cannot exceed the optical band of the phonon spectrum, but is instead in the spectrum gap. By selecting appropriate initial conditions, the radial oscillations of rotorbreathers can be minimized.
