Ethical Issues when Using Digital Platforms to Perform Interviews in Qualitative Health Research

Isaac Maldonado-Castellanos et al.

Summary: Qualitative studies have become popular in various fields and aim to gather information from participant's experiences and perceptions. Digital and video platforms can be useful for conducting interviews in qualitative research. However, there are ethical controversies surrounding the use of these platforms in health research.

The fragile process of Homecoming-Young women in recovery from severe ME/CFS

Silje Helen Krabbe et al.

Summary: This study explores the recovery narratives of 13 young women who had suffered from ME/CFS during childhood and adolescence. The focus is on their perspectives on past experiences from the present. The findings reveal that recovery from ME/CFS is an inter-personal, contextual, fragile, and nonlinear process of homecoming, based on gradually increasing bodily self-awareness. The illness gradually fades into the background, offering the prospect of a healthier tomorrow.

Causal attributions and perceived stigma for myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome

Laura Froehlich et al.

Summary: The study found that perceived causal attributions by others to controllable and unstable causes in ME/CFS patients can lead to lower satisfaction with social roles and activities as well as functional status, mainly due to higher levels of perceived stigma.

Evidence-Based Care for People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

Michael Sharpe et al.

Summary: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disease characterized by disabling fatigue and other symptoms, with evidence-based rehabilitative treatments such as cognitive behavior therapy and graded exercise therapy. Successful rehabilitation does not negate the existence of the illness, and it should always be preceded by thorough clinical assessment and delivered by trained therapists in collaboration with the patient. More research is needed for the treatment of this neglected condition, especially for those severely affected by it.

Stigma perceived by patients with functional somatic syndromes and its effect on health outcomes - A systematic review

Charlotte Ko et al.

Summary: Patients with functional somatic syndromes (FSS) experience stigma, which negatively affects their physical and mental health. Compared to patients with comparable explained conditions, those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fibromyalgia (FM), and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are more likely to perceive stigma. The studies show a correlation between stigma and negative health outcomes.

Caring for the Patient with Severe or Very Severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Jose G. Montoya et al.

Summary: ME/CFS can cause a wide range of severity and functional impairment, with some patients requiring total care. However, severely ill ME/CFS patients struggle to receive appropriate medical care, as clinical guidance on caring for them is limited. This article aims to provide patient-centered recommendations for diagnosis, assessment, treatment, and management of severe ME/CFS, emphasizing the importance of leveraging partnerships and technology to support busy providers in caring for these patients.

A Comprehensive Examination of Severely Ill ME/CFS Patients

Chia-Jung Chang et al.

Summary: One in four ME/CFS patients are severely affected by the disease, with symptoms including fatigue, pain, cognitive impairment, and disturbances in sleep and cognitive testing. The reduced quality of life in patients is negatively correlated with clinical depression, highlighting the urgent need for molecular diagnostic tests for ME/CFS. Additionally, similarities in symptoms between long COVID and ME/CFS suggest that research on ME/CFS may aid in the prevention and treatment of long COVID, and vice versa.

Systematic Review of Mind-Body Interventions to Treat Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Samaneh Khanpour Ardestani et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the use of Mind-body interventions (MBIs) for treating ME/CFS symptoms and found that MBIs can improve fatigue severity, anxiety/depression symptoms, and quality of life in patients. However, challenges such as small sample sizes, heterogeneous diagnostic criteria, and high risk of bias were identified, highlighting the need for further research with standardized outcomes.

Elements of Suffering in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: The Experience of Loss, Grief, Stigma, and Trauma in the Severely and Very Severely Affected

Patricia A. Fennell et al.

Summary: This article examines the suffering experienced by patients with ME/CFS through the lens of the Fennell Four-Phase Model, highlighting the impact of severity, uncertainty, ambiguity, and chronicity on the patient's experience. The importance of health care providers understanding and responding to the intense suffering of severely and very severely affected patients is underscored. Recommendations are provided for clinicians treating ME/CFS patients.
