The fragile process of Homecoming-Young women in recovery from severe ME/CFS

Summary: This study explores the recovery narratives of 13 young women who had suffered from ME/CFS during childhood and adolescence. The focus is on their perspectives on past experiences from the present. The findings reveal that recovery from ME/CFS is an inter-personal, contextual, fragile, and nonlinear process of homecoming, based on gradually increasing bodily self-awareness. The illness gradually fades into the background, offering the prospect of a healthier tomorrow.

Evidence-Based Care for People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

Summary: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disease characterized by disabling fatigue and other symptoms, with evidence-based rehabilitative treatments such as cognitive behavior therapy and graded exercise therapy. Successful rehabilitation does not negate the existence of the illness, and it should always be preceded by thorough clinical assessment and delivered by trained therapists in collaboration with the patient. More research is needed for the treatment of this neglected condition, especially for those severely affected by it.

Summary: Patients with functional somatic syndromes (FSS) experience stigma, which negatively affects their physical and mental health. Compared to patients with comparable explained conditions, those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fibromyalgia (FM), and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are more likely to perceive stigma. The studies show a correlation between stigma and negative health outcomes.

A Comprehensive Examination of Severely Ill ME/CFS Patients

Summary: One in four ME/CFS patients are severely affected by the disease, with symptoms including fatigue, pain, cognitive impairment, and disturbances in sleep and cognitive testing. The reduced quality of life in patients is negatively correlated with clinical depression, highlighting the urgent need for molecular diagnostic tests for ME/CFS. Additionally, similarities in symptoms between long COVID and ME/CFS suggest that research on ME/CFS may aid in the prevention and treatment of long COVID, and vice versa.
