Non-conventional yeast strains: Unexploited resources for effective commercialization of second generation bioethanol

Ifeanyi A. Ndubuisi et al.

Summary: The most studied yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, has been widely used in industrial production of bioethanol from first generation feedstock. However, for cost reduction and to avoid competition with food, researchers are now exploring second generation bioethanol production from lignocellulosic feedstock. Genetic engineering is being employed to develop recombinant S. cerevisiae strains that are capable of fermenting pentose sugars and with the necessary stability and robustness for commercial second generation bioethanol production. Additionally, non-conventional yeast strains are being investigated as potential solutions due to their ability to ferment both hexose and pentose sugars, withstand high temperatures, and tolerate inhibitory substances encountered during lignocellulosic hydrolysis. This review highlights the limitations of conventional yeast species and the potential of non-conventional yeast strains in the commercialization of second generation bioethanol.

Recent advances in consolidated bioprocessing for conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into bioethanol-A review

Selvakumar Periyasamy et al.

Summary: With the growth of the global population, it is crucial to develop long-term technological advancements in order to meet energy demands while preserving the Earth's limited resources. Using renewable energy systems offers numerous benefits, such as stabilizing energy supply and demand, ensuring food security and economic stability, and protecting the environment from pollution. Bioethanol presents a potential alternative as a renewable and long-term energy source, but reducing production costs is critical for its long-term viability and economic competitiveness against petroleum. Converting lignocellulose to bioethanol through consolidated bioprocessing could offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient approach, but further research and optimization are still needed. This review explores biomass pretreatments, process enhancements, recombinant microbial catalysts and enzymes, and metabolic engineering in the context of consolidated bioprocessing, providing an overview to guide future research in lignocellulosic biomass for bioethanol production.

Synthesis of tetraazacalix[2]arene[2]triazine-containing poly (dimethylsiloxane) with elastic property induced by pinning effect of the calixarene ring

Ryota Shibata et al.

Summary: In this study, Tetraazacalix[2]arene[2]triazine dichloride was polymerized with PDMS via solution polycondensation to give azacalixarene-containing polymers, which were successfully fabricated into tough films. The ACAT-PDMS films exhibited high tensile strength, large elongation at break, and non-cytotoxicity to HeLa and IMR-90 cells.
