Selenium Deficiency-Induced Oxidative Stress Causes Myocardial Injury in Calves by Activating Inflammation, Apoptosis, and Necroptosis

Lei Lei et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of Se deficiency on myocardial injury in weaned calves. The results showed that Se deficiency led to myocardial necrosis, inflammation, and decreased myocardial Se concentrations. The expression of selenoprotein genes was also affected by Se deficiency. Furthermore, Se deficiency induced oxidative stress, apoptosis, and necroptosis in the myocardium, activated inflammatory pathways, and increased NF-kappa B signaling. These findings suggest that Se deficiency causes myocardial injury in weaned calves through multiple mechanisms.

THE EVOLUTION OF REGULATED CELL DEATH PATHWAYS IN ANIMALS AND THEIR EVASION BY PATHOGENS

Bart Tummers et al.

Summary: The coevolution of host-pathogen interactions plays a crucial role in human physiological traits related to protection against or susceptibility to infections. Animals utilize regulated cell death pathways to control infections, which have coevolved with microbes. However, microbes have also developed strategies to interfere with these pathways and evade eradication by the host.

Structure of the mammalian ribosome as it decodes the selenocysteine UGA codon

Tarek Hilal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of Sec UGA recoding in eukaryotes and found that it is different from the mechanism in bacteria. Cryo-electron microscopy was used to visualize a complex consisting of the noncoding Sec-insertion sequence (SECIS), SECIS-binding protein 2 (SBP2), and the 40S ribosomal subunit, which enables the Sec-specific elongation factor eEFSec to deliver Sec. Additionally, the ribosomal protein eS31 plays a role in connecting the Sec-specific transfer RNA (tRNASec) and SBP2.

Status and risks of selenium deficiency in a traditional selenium-deficient area in Northeast China

Chenmeng Yang et al.

Summary: Research in Northeast China found that soil selenium deficiency has significantly decreased, but crop products still have low selenium levels due to weak soil-plant transfer. Climate conditions and soil properties were identified as key factors influencing soil selenium distribution, and the challenge remains in ensuring sufficient selenium content in agricultural products for residents in selenium-deficient areas, particularly in China's growing agricultural production environment.

Selenium deficiency causes apoptosis through endoplasmic reticulum stress in swine small intestine

Yingying Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism by which selenium deficiency causes intestinal damage in swine, showing that selenium deficiency can induce ER stress, increase apoptosis, and ultimately lead to tissue damage in the small intestine. These results fill the gap in understanding how selenium deficiency induces intestinal injury in swine.

Calcium overload and reactive oxygen species accumulation induced by selenium deficiency promote autophagy in swine small intestine

Yingying Zheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that selenium deficiency can disrupt calcium homeostasis in the small intestine of swine, leading to cell autophagy and oxidative stress, which may explain the mechanism of selenium deficiency-induced diarrhea in swine.
