Direct Detection of FeVI Water Oxidation Intermediates in an Aqueous Solution

Chao Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, the active center of NiFe-based catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was identified as Fe through the detection of highly-oxidized Fe-VI intermediates leached into the electrolyte. Furthermore, the incorporation of Co into NiFe-based catalyst was found to enhance the formation of Fe-VI active species and improve the OER activity of the catalyst. These findings provide insights into the mechanisms for sustainable generation of Fe-VI active species in NiFe-based catalysts and lay the foundation for the design of more efficient and stable OER catalysts.

Radiative thermal conductivity of single-crystal bridgmanite at the core-mantle boundary with implications for thermal evolution of the Earth

Motohiko Murakami et al.

Summary: The Earth has been releasing vast amounts of heat from its interior to the surface, driving mantle convection and tectonic activities. The radiative thermal conductivity of bridgmanite at the core-mantle boundary has been revealed to be substantially high, leading to a higher heat flow from the core and more vigorous mantle convection than expected. This higher cooling efficiency of the mantle may weaken tectonic activities more rapidly than conventionally believed.

Overall photosynthesis of H2O2 by an inorganic semiconductor

Tian Liu et al.

Summary: Artificial photosynthesis of H2O2 using earth-abundant water and oxygen is a promising approach to achieve scalable and cost-effective solar fuel production. Recent studies have made significant progress in this field, with a focus on using organic polymers. However, the use of organic polymers is susceptible to oxidation. This study presents an inorganic Mo-doped faceted BiVO4 system that overcomes this challenge and demonstrates a high overall H2O2 photosynthesis efficiency among inorganic photocatalysts.

Tailoring the Crystallographic Orientation of a Sb2S3 Thin Film for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Reduction

Minji Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a completely [hk1]-oriented Sb2S3 film was successfully prepared, which exhibited lower defect density, lower recombination, and improved carrier transport efficiency compared to randomly oriented Sb2S3 film. A photocathode based on the [hk1]-oriented Sb2S3 film achieved high photocurrent density and high applied bias photon-to-current efficiency in PEC water splitting.

Full-Space Potential Gradient Driven Charge Migration inside BiFeO3 Photocathode

Bing Tan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that by building a gradient homojunction in BiFeO3 photocathodes, a full-space electric field can be induced, resulting in improved photocurrent and H2O2 production. The presence of Bi vacancies significantly modulates the Fermi level of BiFeO3, promoting charge collection.

BiFeO3 photocathodes for efficient H2O2 production via charge carrier dynamics engineering

Zemin Zhang et al.

Summary: Metal oxide semiconductors have great potential as photo-electrodes for photoelectrochemical H2O2 production. However, the efficiency and selectivity need to be improved. In this study, BiFeO3 was used as the model photocathode, and introducing a LaNiO3 layer as the charge collection layer effectively enhanced the photoelectrochemical activity and H2O2 production.

A self-healing catalyst for electrocatalytic and photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution in highly alkaline conditions

Chao Feng et al.

Summary: The study finds that cobalt can promote the self-healing of leached iron centers in borate-intercalated nickel-iron-cobalt oxyhydroxides, leading to the synthesis of an active borate-intercalated NiCoFe-LDH catalyst with self-healing ability under harsh OER conditions. The presence of both ferrous ions and borate ions in the electrolyte is crucial to the catalyst's self-healing, demonstrating its potential for integration into photoelectrochemical devices.

Photocatalytic solar hydrogen production from water on a 100-m2 scale

Hiroshi Nishiyama et al.

Summary: Hydrogen, as an energy carrier, can be obtained through photocatalysis and electrolysis, making it a carbon-neutral energy source. While photocatalytic water splitting efficiency is low, large-scale safe production and collection of hydrogen is feasible. The essential next steps for economic viability and practical use are reactor and process optimization to reduce costs and improve efficiency and stability.
