How much can novel solid sorbents reduce the cost of post-combustion CO2 capture? A techno-economic investigation on the cost limits of pressure-vacuum swing adsorption

Sai Gokul Subraveti et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the cost limits of using PVSA cycles for post-combustion CO2 capture under the assumption of an ideal zero-cost adsorbent. Through integrated techno-economic optimization, the study determines the lowest possible cost of CO2 avoided for different industrial flue gas compositions and flow rates. The research shows that PVSA can be an attractive option for flue gas streams with high CO2 compositions, with ideal adsorbents demonstrating promise for future development and optimization.

Mixed-matrix membranes consisting of Pebax and novel nitrogen-doped porous carbons for CO2 separation

Yonghong Wang et al.

Summary: Fabricating high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for CO2 separation is important for industrial applications, but the poor compatibility between the polymer and filler hinders their development. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous carbons (NPC) were synthesized and blended with polyetherblock-amide (Pebax) to create MMMs with improved mechanical and CO2 separation properties. The incorporation of NPC increased the nitrogen content and enhanced the CO2 permeability and selectivity of the MMMs. The MMMs with 5 wt% NPC showed excellent gas separation performance, approaching the upper limit set by Robeson in 2019.

Summary: The study developed a PVA-based reverse selective composite membrane by blending CO2-selective PEBAX, which improved both CO2 permeability and selectivity. The composite with 60 wt% PEBAX exhibited the best performance, surpassing traditional limits and offering a new approach for preparing polymeric membranes for H-2 separation applications.

A rapid multi-objective optimization of pressure and temperature swing adsorption for CO2 capture based on simplified equilibrium model

Jiajun Wang et al.

Summary: A new equilibrium model was developed for the optimization of a PTSA cycle for CO2 capture, showing that the largest number of optimal Pareto solutions exist at ambient temperature. There is a competitive relationship between recovery rate and exergy efficiency, with Zeolite 13X-APG identified as having the best exergy efficiency among twenty screened adsorbents. By introducing a correction method, the error of cycle performance was reduced to 0.1%.

Introducing two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks with axial coordination anion into Pebax for CO2/CH4 separation

Minmin Gou et al.

Summary: The 2D MOF material Cu(BPY)(2)(OTF)(2) with axial coordination anion was prepared and combined with Pebax polymer to fabricate efficient MMMs for the separation of CO2/CH4 gas mixtures. The optimized CO2 separation performance of the MMMs showed significant improvement compared to pure Pebax, due to the synergistic effect between structure and functional groups of Cu(BPY)(2)(OTF)(2) nanosheets.

Suixin Zhang et al.

Summary: Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared using Pebax-1074 polymer as matrix and SAPO-23 zeolite as dopant via solvent evaporation method. The introduction of SAPO zeolite improved the CO2/N-2 selectivity of the MMMs, with the highest selectivity observed in MMMs incorporating 5% SAPO zeolite under certain conditions.
