Sandwich-Structured, Hydrophobic, Nanocellulose-Reinforced Polyvinyl Alcohol as an Alternative Straw Material

Chun-Tu Chou et al.

Summary: An environmentally friendly, hydrophobic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film was developed using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and nanofibers (CNFs) to enhance water vapor barrier and thermal properties. Adjusting the heat treatment conditions increased the crystallinity of PLA in the PVA-based hydrophobic composite films, significantly improving their contact angle and water vapor barrier. This led to a substantial increase in the service life of the biodegradable material-based straw.

Cellulose nanocrystal extraction from rice straw using a chlorine-free bleaching process

Shih-Chen Shi et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have excellent properties and can be extracted from agricultural by-products, achieving high purity through specific processing techniques. This study successfully increased the yield using a green bleaching process and UV-emitting diode-assisted oxidation reaction.

Summary: Nanocellulose shows potential in metal adsorption, with sulfated and carboxylated nanocellulose samples exhibiting high adsorptive capacities for cobalt. The synthesized nanofibers demonstrate expressive maximum cobalt recoveries and significant differences between liquid phase data and LA-ICP-MS results.

An overview of biodegradable packaging in food industry

Salman Shaikh et al.

Summary: For many years, conventional plastics have been widely used in packaging applications, especially in the food industry. However, their nondegradable nature has led to severe ecological problems. Biodegradable polymers have emerged as a promising alternative, offering environmental benefits and significant market potential for food packaging applications.
