Interaction networks and pathway analysis of genetic resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep

Farjad Rafeie et al.

Summary: Gastrointestinal nematode (GINs) infections are a major concern for sheep production worldwide. This study aimed to identify potential biomarkers associated with resistance to ovine GINs through network analysis. Comprehensive gene and protein interaction networks were reconstructed for candidate genes involved in immune pathways related to GIN resistance. The results provide useful information for functional annotation of candidate genes and the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to nematode infections.

A review on the potential effects of environmental and economic factors on sheep genetic diversity: Consequences of climate change

George Wanjala et al.

Summary: Climate change has a significant impact on livestock productivity, particularly in terms of milk, meat, and reproduction. Thermal stress, caused by climate change, is the major limiting factor in animal agriculture. It is important to understand how climatic variables affect the genetic diversity of livestock, especially using sheep as a model due to its wide range of habitats and variability. Factors such as heat stress, water scarcity, low-quality forage, and diseases play a crucial role in shaping adaptation traits and altering genetic diversity in indigenous sheep breeds.

Assessing the Genomics Structure of Dorper and White Dorper Variants, and Dorper Populations in South Africa and Hungary

George Wanjala et al.

Summary: The Dorper sheep breed was created for harsh environments in South Africa, with two variants developed in the selection process. It has gained popularity worldwide and is reported to do better than locally adapted breeds. Dorper is widely used in crossbreeding to improve other native breeds. However, there has been no research on the genomic status of Dorper in South Africa and other regions. This study compared the genomic architecture of Dorper populations in South Africa and Hungary, finding significant genetic variations potentially influenced by environmental factors and coat color.

Identification of Key Genes Related to Postnatal Testicular Development Based on Transcriptomic Data of Testis in Hu Sheep

Haiyue Xu et al.

Summary: This study used RNA-Seq to analyze the transcriptome of sheep testes at different developmental stages and identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to sheep testicular development. GO and KEGG analysis showed that these DEGs were mainly involved in testis development and spermatogenesis, and several reproduction-associated genes were confirmed. Additionally, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) identified two gene modules and core genes associated with testis development and testis size.

Summary: The aim of this study was to identify CNVs and perform a CNV-based population genetics analysis in five Italian sheep breeds. The results showed that the five breeds tend to cluster in distinct groups, and gene enrichment analysis revealed genes involved in lipid metabolism, immune response, and the olfactory pathway.

Genetic Characterization and Alternative Preservation Ways of Locally Adapted Sheep Breeds: Cases of Private and Public Sheep Sectors in Tunisia and Italy

Yousra Ben Sassi-Zaidy et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and preservation decisions of native Mediterranean sheep breeds from Tunisia and Italy. The results showed that the Tunisian native breeds had higher genetic diversity compared to the Italian breeds, with lower levels of inbreeding. The comparison between private and public farms revealed the superiority of public/institutional breeding management strategies. The study highlights the importance of genomic characterization in evaluating and preserving genetic diversity in native and well-adapted sheep breeds.

Coevolution of Rumen Epithelial circRNAs with Their Microbiota and Metabolites in Response to Cold-Season Nutritional Stress in Tibetan Sheep

Xinyu Guo et al.

Summary: This study explores the coevolution of host genome and gut microbiome in Tibetan sheep during nutrition stress in the cold season. Results showed that DE circRNAs promote adaptation of Tibetan sheep in the cold season, with correlations to microbiota and metabolites, aiding in their adaptation to the cold season in high-altitude areas.

Yuliang Wen et al.

Summary: The study found that the expression of HIF1A and PDK4 increased with altitude in Tibetan sheep, along with an increase in LDH activities, ATP, NADH, lactic acid, and pyruvic acid contents. Energy supply and proteostasis were maintained in Tibetan sheep tissues during extreme hypoxia, with prioritized energy conservation over cytoprotective protein chaperoning at an altitude of 4,500 m.

The pattern of runs of homozygosity and genomic inbreeding in world-wide sheep populations

Maryam Nosrati et al.

Summary: The study revealed patterns, distributions, and levels of ROHs in the sheep genome, with most ROHs being small and the level of genomic inbreeding relatively low. The inbreeding coefficients based on ROH increased with distance from Southwest Asia, with maximum values detected in North European breeds. Multiple ROH hotspots were identified across 25 different autosomes, with most detected genes related to growth, body weight, meat production, wool production, and pigmentation.
