Bismuth Redox Catalysis: An Emerging Main-Group Platform for Organic Synthesis

Hye Won Moon et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of synthetic methodologies that capitalize on the redox cycling of bismuth. It covers different catalytic methods, mechanisms, and design strategies for stabilizing low-valent and high-valent bismuth species. Additionally, a recent example of non-redox catalysis involving bismuth is discussed. The article concludes with a discussion on opportunities and future directions in this emerging field of catalysis.

Radical Activation of N-H and O-H Bonds at Bismuth(II)

Xiuxiu Yang et al.

Summary: The development of unconventional strategies for the activation of ammonia and water is crucial for sustainable chemistry. In this study, a radical equilibrium complex based on bismuth is synthesized and characterized, which allows for the in situ generation of reactive Bi(II) species. The resulting organobismuth(II) complex exhibits unprecedented effects on various X-H bonds and enables rapid radical activation of N-H and O-H bonds, leading to the formation of Bi(III)-amido and -alkoxy complexes. Furthermore, the Bi(III)-N complexes show unique reactivity towards H+, H-, and H· sources, providing alternative pathways for main group chemistry.

Bismuth Amides Mediate Facile and Highly Selective Pn-Pn Radical-Coupling Reactions (Pn=N, P, As)

Kai Oberdorf et al.

Summary: The controlled release of aminyl radicals from bismuth amide species at ambient temperature enables selective N-N coupling reactions to yield hydrazines. Analyzes using various spectroscopy techniques and calculations reveal low homolytic bond-dissociation energies, suggesting radical coupling in the coordination sphere of bismuth, and demonstrate the effectiveness of electronic and steric parameters in controlling these reactions.

Recent Developments in the Chemistry of Pn(I) (Pn=N, P, As, Sb, Bi) Cations

Rahul Deb et al.

Summary: The Group 15 Pn(I) cations, isoelectronic with donor-stabilized carbones, exhibit weak nucleophilicity despite having two lone pairs of electrons due to their inherent positive charge. Enhancing their Lewis basicity with strongly electron-donating ligands and chelating cyclic ligand systems has proven effective in increasing their nucleophilicity. Recent achievements in isolating fleeting Sb(I) and Bi(I) cations have been discussed, along with a discussion on the syntheses, structure, bonding situations, and reactivity of the Pn(I) cations, providing an outlook on their periodic trends and future applications.

Mujahuddin M. Siddiqui et al.

Summary: The paper presents the first examples of donor-stabilized two-coordinate Sb(I) and Bi(I) ions, which belong to a new class of acyclic cations of Group 15. These compounds were successfully synthesized and characterized through various analytical techniques, demonstrating their potential as heavier valence isoelectronic analogues of carbones.

CH Activation of Cationic Bismuth Amides: Heteroaromaticity, Derivatization, and Lewis Acidity

Kai Oberdorf et al.

Summary: The cationization of Bi(NPh2)(3) for single- and double-CH activation reactions has been successfully applied to bismuth amides with two aryl groups at the nitrogen, resulting in the first example of a homoleptic bismuth amide with a mixed aryl/alkyl substitution pattern. The Lewis acidity of neutral bismuth amides was compared with that of cationic species using the Gutmann-Beckett method. The heteroaromatic character of [Bi(C6H3R)(2)NH(triflate)] compounds was investigated by theoretical methods, revealing their iso-valence-electronic nature with anthracene.

Catalytic Hydrodefluorination via Oxidative Addition, Ligand Metathesis, and Reductive Elimination at Bi(I)/Bi(III) Centers

Yue Pang et al.

Summary: The study reports a hydrodefluorination reaction of polyfluoroarenes catalyzed by bismuthinidenes, involving a Bi(I)/Bi(III) redox cycle with C(sp(2))-F oxidative addition, F/H ligand metathesis, and C(sp(2))-H reductive elimination steps. Spectroscopic evidence supports the formation of a transient Phebox-Bi(III)(4-tetrafluoropyridyl) hydride during catalysis, which decomposes at low temperature to regenerate the propagating Phebox-Bi(I). This protocol highlights a unique catalytic example of a main-group center performing three elementary organometallic steps in a low-valent redox manifold.
