Characteristics and outcome of COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU: a nationwide cohort study on the comparison between the first and the consecutive upsurges of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands

Dave A. Dongelmans et al.

Summary: This study assessed the trends in the quality of care for COVID-19 patients in the ICU over time in the Netherlands. The study found that during the second and third waves, there was a decrease in the use of mechanical ventilation and vasoactive drugs compared to the first wave. The mortality rate was significantly lower in the third wave.

Key summary of German national treatment guidance for hospitalized COVID-19 patients Key pharmacologic recommendations from a national German living guideline using an Evidence to Decision Framework (last updated 17.05.2021)

Jakob J. Malin et al.

Summary: This executive summary of a national living guideline provides rapid evidence-based recommendations on drug interventions for hospitalized patients with COVID-19, using systematic assessment and decision processes. 11 key recommendations for COVID-19 drug therapy are included in the guideline, with strong recommendations for corticosteroids and prophylactic anticoagulation as standard of care. The guidelines will be updated as new evidence emerges.

Are we ready for conformance checking in healthcare? Measuring adherence to clinical guidelines: A scoping systematic literature review

Eimy Oliart et al.

Summary: This scoping review systematically assesses the criteria used to measure adherence to clinical guidelines in the past 20 years and explores the suitability of using process mining techniques. By translating narrative text rules into a high-level process model, the study explores the main patterns and gaps in measuring adherence to clinical guidelines and their impact on the adoption of process mining techniques in healthcare.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Improved Modeling of Processes

Riza Velioglu et al.

Summary: In modern business processes, the amount of collected data has significantly increased in recent years. Automated knowledge extraction based on process mining has been proposed to provide users with intuitive access to this valuable data. While most technologies focus on reconstructing explicit business process models, machine learning (ML) has not been widely applied. This contribution evaluates the ability of modern Transformer architectures and traditional ML technologies to model process regularities and predict outcomes. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of ML models in predicting critical outcomes, and the attention mechanisms and feature relevance determination highlight important features for process predictions.

Analyzing Medical Data with Process Mining: A COVID-19 Case Study

Marco Pegoraro et al.

Summary: With the recent increase in availability of medical data, enabled by the automation and digitization of medical equipment, accurate and complete analysis of patients' medical data has become possible through various branches of data science. This paper presents preliminary findings obtained through established process mining techniques on the medical data of COVID-19 patients at Uniklinik Aachen hospital, showing that these techniques can be used to reconstruct a model of ICU treatments for COVID patients.

Process mining leveraging the analysis of patient journey and outcomes: Stroke assistance during the Covid-19 pandemic

Gabrielle dos Santos Leandro et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in deteriorating health conditions upon hospital admission, reduced hospitalization time, increased delays in receiving reperfusion therapies, and a preference for referral hospitals over emergency services. Process mining was effective in identifying time-sensitive events and improving patient safety, with potential for replication in other healthcare studies.
