Optimization of Electrolytes for High-Performance Aqueous Aluminum-Ion Batteries

Andinet Ejigu et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-performing aqueous aluminum-ion battery (AIB) that utilizes a Zn-supported Al alloy, an Al[TFSI](3) electrolyte, and a MnO2 cathode. The use of Al[TFSI](3) extends the voltage window of the electrolyte, while the use of Zn-Al alloy mitigates surface passivation. The AIB cells constructed using this combination achieve a high discharge voltage and specific capacity, with excellent long-term reversibility.

Bi-functional poly(vinylidene difluoride) coated Al anodes for highly rechargeable aqueous Al-ion batteries

Qingfei Hao et al.

Summary: In this study, a poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) coating was developed to inhibit hydrogen evolution and alleviate corrosion on the aluminum anode in aqueous electrolytes. The PVDF coating showed a strong interaction with Al3+ ions, leading to uniform aluminum deposition. As a result, the PVDF-Al/K2CoFe(CN)6 cell demonstrated high Coulombic efficiency after multiple cycles, making it a promising strategy for the development of high-performance and low-cost aqueous aluminum-ion batteries.

Reversible Al Metal Anodes Enabled by Amorphization for Aqueous Aluminum Batteries

Chunshuang Yan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that amorphization is an effective strategy to address critical issues in aqueous aluminum metal batteries (AMBs). By shifting the reduction potential for aluminum deposition, the amorphous aluminum (a-Al) interfacial layer facilitates stable aluminum plating and stripping, while mitigating passivation and enhancing interfacial ion transfer kinetics. The use of a noncorrosive, low-cost, and fluorine-free electrolyte further contributes to the excellent electrochemical performance of the AMBs.

A stable and high-energy aqueous aluminum based battery

Renqian Tao et al.

Summary: In this study, a strongly hydrolyzed/polymerized aluminum-iron hybrid electrolyte was developed to improve the electrochemical behavior of aqueous aluminum ion batteries (AAIBs). Through the use of this electrolyte, reversible aluminum ion intercalation/deintercalation and stable aluminum deposition/stripping were achieved. The electrolyte also contributed to electrochemical energy storage through an iron redox reaction, enhancing the reversibility and energy density of AAIBs. This green electrolyte shows promising potential for large-scale energy storage applications.
