Distribution pattern of N-damo bacteria along an anthropogenic nitrogen input gradient from the coastal mangrove wetland to the South China sea sediments

Jing Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diversity and abundance of n-damo bacteria along a nitrogen input gradient from coastal wetlands to the pristine South China Sea. The results suggest that n-damo bacteria may play a major role in anaerobic denitrification in South China Sea sediments and could be used as a bio-indicator for monitoring anthropogenic/terrestrial inputs in marine environments.

Global importance of methane emissions from drainage ditches and canals

M. Peacock et al.

Summary: Research shows that globally, drainage ditches emit significant amounts of CH4, comparable to emissions from lakes, streams, reservoirs, and wetlands, contributing to a small percentage of global anthropogenic CH4 emissions. Emissions are positively correlated with temperature and highest from eutrophic ditches. Including ditch emissions in national GHG inventories is advocated to avoid incorrect conclusions about the impact of drainage-based land management on CH4 budgets.

Microbial abundance and activity of nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidizers in estuarine and intertidal wetlands: Heterogeneity and driving factors

Feiyang Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed the distribution pattern and controlling factors of nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) bioprocesses in estuarine and intertidal marshes. It showed that Candidatus 'Methylomirabilis oxyfera'-like DAMO bacteria and Candidatus 'Methanoperedens nitroreducens'-like DAMO archaea cooccurred, with higher abundance of the M. oxyfera-like bacteria and a positive correlation with sediment pH and ammonium content.

Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane Coupled with Dissimilatory Nitrate Reduction to Ammonium Fuels Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation

Wen-Bo Nie et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that n-DAMO archaea can link the anaerobic oxidation of methane to DNRA, facilitating nitrate reduction. This process occurs in biofilms in a membrane biofilm reactor, promoting the global nitrogen cycle. The localized nitrite gradients produced by n-DAMO archaea stimulate Anammox bacteria to consume nitrite, aiding n-DAMO archaea in resisting nitrite stress.
