Hydrodynamic instabilities of two successive slow/fast interfaces induced by a weak shock

Yu Liang et al.

Summary: The shock-induced instability developments of two successive interfaces remain a challenging problem. The feedthrough and reverberating waves between these interfaces have a significant impact on their hydrodynamic instabilities. This study experimentally and numerically examines the evolutions of two successive slow/fast interfaces driven by a weak shock wave. It proposes a general one-dimensional theory to describe the movements of the interfaces and establishes an analytical, linear model to quantify the feedthrough effect on the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability.

Shock-induced collapse and migration of nanoscale He bubble in single crystal Al

Jian-Li Shao et al.

Summary: This letter reports the shock-induced collapse and migration process of high-pressure He bubbles in aluminum based on atomistic simulations. The study found that the He bubble undergoes finite collapse and permanent deformation, and can be broken down by the nano-jet of the metal under strong shock. However, it returns to a reduced sphere in the molten metal after long-time evolution. The thermodynamics of shocked He bubbles were described using the Carnhan-Starling hard-sphere model, and the shock-induced migration of He bubble was revealed, which can be predicted based on the shock intensity.

The rupture and ejection of near-surface helium bubble in single crystal Cu under shock loading

Haowen Wu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that higher impact velocity leads to stronger jet and more significant expansion and rupture of the bubble. Larger bubbles result in stronger internal jet, easier failure of the metal layer, and more remarkable expansion and rupture of the bubble. In addition, a higher number ratio of helium bubble size and He/vacancy leads to more obvious metal melting and easier metal layer failure.

Design optimization for Richtmyer-Meshkov instability suppression at shock-compressed material interfaces

Dane M. Sterbentz et al.

Summary: The Richtmyer-Meshkov instability is a phenomenon that occurs at the interface of two substances of different densities due to an impulsive acceleration. The growth of RMI spikes can be effectively suppressed by altering the geometry and other properties of the interface material.

Shock responses of nanoporous copper with helium doping by molecular dynamics simulations

Xin-Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that helium doping affects the compression ratio and shock wave propagation speed of nanoporous copper, leading to internal helium jets and the formation of a helium shock wave during collapse of helium-doped voids. Surface damage in nanoporous copper is influenced by helium doping when the atomic ratio of He-vacancy >5%, making it more difficult to form ejecta under high speed impact.
