Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: Since the discovery of graphene, research on the family of 2D materials has flourished. Metal phosphorous chalcogenides (MPX3) have gained renewed attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties, making them excellent candidates for electrocatalysis. This review summarizes the recent applications of MPX3 electrocatalysts in reactions such as hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, and oxygen reduction. It also discusses effective research methods such as structural regulation, chemical doping, and multi-material composites to optimize the catalytic properties of these materials. The challenges and opportunities for electrocatalytic applications of MPX3 materials are also addressed, aiming to advance the development of MPX3 and related materials for electrocatalysis.

High activity and stability in Ni2P/(Co,Ni)OOH heterointerface with a multiple-hierarchy structure for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

LiLi Zhang et al.

Summary: By using a facile two-step method, a Ni2P/(Co,Ni)OOH heterointerface with a three-level hierarchy morphology is prepared. The multiple levels of hierarchy structures provide a large area for active sites loading and facilitate substance transportation, contributing to enhanced HER activity. The strong charge transfer at the heterointerface eliminates spin asymmetry and achieves the thermos-neutral adsorption of active H species, further improving the catalytic performance. Density functional theory (DFT) and in-situ Raman measurements confirm the presence of sufficient Ni atoms as active sites. The Ni2P/(Co,Ni)OOH exhibits much better HER activity compared to separate Ni2P or (Co,Ni)OOH, achieving a high current density at a relatively low overpotential and a small Tafel slope in alkaline electrolyte. This work provides inspiration for optimizing HER activity using multiple-level hierarchy structures.

Probing active sites on MnPSe3 and FePSe3 tri-chalcogenides as a design strategy for better hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts

Tisita Das et al.

Summary: The electronic structure and catalytic activity of two ternary tri-chalcogenide nano-ribbons, MnPSe3 and FePSe3, in hydrogen evolution reactions have been investigated using first-principles electronic structure calculations. Specific edge sites have been identified as the catalytic centers in both materials. HER catalytic activity has been predicted through determining the hydrogen adsorption free energy, with and without considering aqueous solvent effects, and hydrogen coverage dependency has also been studied. The identification of catalytically active edge sites on these materials bridges experimental observations and theoretical predictions.

From Monolayers to Nanotubes: Toward Catalytic Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Gunther Luft Cardoso et al.

Summary: Using density functional theory, the properties of WS2 and WSe2 monolayers and nanotubes, as well as ternary WSSe nanotubes, were investigated. The nanotubes showed reduced band gaps and improved free energy for H adsorption compared to monolayers, indicating better catalytic performance. These results suggest that winding up monolayers into nanotubes and producing ternary nanotubes may significantly enhance their performance for hydrogen production.

Finding the catalytically active sites on the layered tri-chalcogenide compounds CoPS3 and NiPS3 for hydrogen evolution reaction

Khorsed Alam et al.

Summary: Density functional theory calculations were used to identify catalytically active sites for hydrogen evolution reaction on single layers of transition metal tri-chalcogenide compounds CoPS3 and NiPS3. The under-coordinated P and S atoms at the edges were found to act as active sites, depending on the coverage of H on the electrode, and overpotentials for HER were estimated for the two materials. These findings resolve discrepancies between experimental results and earlier calculations, and offer insights for enhancing catalytic efficiency of these materials.
