Halide-free catalytic carbon dioxide fixation of epoxides to cyclic carbonates under atmospheric pressure

Antarip Mitra et al.

Summary: The development of a water stable halide-free catalyst for synthesizing cyclic carbonates from epoxides using CO2 under atmospheric pressure has been achieved. The catalyst shows high efficiency in converting a wide range of epoxides to cyclic carbonates with high selectivity and quantitative yield. It can sustain multiple cycles of catalysis without compromising activity and chemical integrity, confirming its heterogeneous nature.

Summary: General routes for the synthesis of silica-immobilized symmetrical and unsymmetrical salophen and salen ligands and metal complexes have been developed. Both the symmetrical and unsymmetrical silica-supported salophens were found to catalyze the formation of cyclic carbonates.

Catalytic cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides by the synergistic effect of acidity and alkalinity in a functionalized biochar

Bin-Hai Cheng et al.

Summary: The study proposes a facile method to prepare nitrogen and oxygen-rich porous biochar by pyrolysis of chitosan under CO2 atmosphere, and demonstrates the high performance of the obtained metal-free carbon material catalyst in cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides. Doped nitrogen and oxygen show a synergistic effect for this addition reaction, and the catalytic efficiency can be enhanced through tuning the content of nitrogen and oxygen.

Simple Halogen-Free, Biobased Organic Salts Convert Glycidol to Glycerol Carbonate under Atmospheric CO2 Pressure

Jitpisut Poolwong et al.

Summary: The synthesis of glycerol carbonate (GC) can be promoted by bio-based and readily available organic salts, leading to quantitative GC formation under atmospheric CO2 pressure and moderate temperatures. Sodium citrate, as the most efficient catalyst, plays a crucial role in GC formation through its hydrogen bond donor and weakly basic sites. Furthermore, metal alginates can also be used as recoverable bio-based catalysts for similar reactions.

Halide-free pyridinium saccharinate binary organocatalyst for the cycloaddition of CO2 into epoxides

Haoying Tong et al.

Summary: Cycloaddition of CO2 into epoxides (CCE) reaction is a commercially viable chemical process, but the use of halide anion as a co-catalyst poses potential issues. To address this, we propose a halide-free catalyst composed of saccharin and a strong pyridine base. The results show that this catalyst can efficiently convert epoxides into cyclic carbonates under mild conditions.

Bio-based organic polyamides as a non-metal heterogeneous catalyst for the halide-free cycloaddition of carbon dioxide

Zhongxiao Yue et al.

Summary: An environmentally-friendly organic catalyst, MFM-KUST, was successfully synthesized from biobased nitrogen-rich precursors. It exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides to form cyclic carbonates under halide- and solvent-free conditions. The catalyst's performance was attributed to the synergistic effects between hydrogen bond donors, imino groups, and hydrazine group with edge defects.

Daniele Polidoro et al.

Summary: In this study, metal-free nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts obtained from chitosan, chitin, and shrimp shell wastes were used for the synthesis of organic cyclic carbonates from CO2. The catalysts showed good stability and reusability, with ca. (75 +/- 3)% of the initial conversion achieved/retained after six recycles.

Fei Chen et al.

Summary: By synthesizing new N-heterocyclic carbene-nitrogen molybdenum complexes, an efficient catalytic system has been developed for the conversion of epoxides and terminal alkynes at lower temperature and pressure. The cooperative catalysis mechanism between molybdenum complex and tetrabutyl ammonium iodide allows for the effective utilization of CO2.

Direct oxidative carboxylation of terminal olefins to cyclic carbonates by tungstate assisted-tandem catalysis

Roberto Calmanti et al.

Summary: Tungstate catalysts are commonly used for olefin epoxidation reactions, but their catalytic activity for CO2 insertion in epoxides has recently been discovered. A new catalytic tandem process was developed for directly converting olefins into cyclic organic carbonates (COCs) using an ammonium tungstate ionic liquid catalyst. This process showed high efficiency and selectivity in converting 1-decene into decene carbonate without the need for intermediate work-up.
