How germline genes promote malignancy in cancer cells

Jan Willem Bruggeman et al.

Summary: This article proposes a hypothesis that activating the germline program promotes cancer cell malignancy. The four hallmark processes of the germline, including meiosis, epigenetic plasticity, migration, and metabolic plasticity, enable germ cells and cancer cells to have replicative immortality. Especially, meiotic genes are frequently expressed in cancer, suggesting their potential role in oncogenesis.

The Role of Neuropilin-2 in the Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition of Colorectal Cancer: A Systematic Review

Cristina Lungulescu et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigates the expression and function of neuropilin-2 (NRP-2) in colorectal cancer. The majority of studies suggest that NRP-2 is highly expressed in colorectal cancer cells compared to normal colonic mucosa. The presence of NRP-2 is associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition and metastatic progression in cancer.

Cancer-Testis Gene Biomarkers Discovered in Colon Cancer Patients

Mikhlid H. Almutairi et al.

Summary: In Saudi Arabia, colon cancer is the most common cancer in men and the third most common cancer in women. Most cases are diagnosed through clinical exams rather than screening programs. Identifying potential cancer-specific biomarkers for early detection is urgently needed. This study aimed to identify cancer-testis gene biomarkers in Saudi Arabian colon cancer patients, finding several potential candidate genes for colon cancer markers.

Implication of Different Tumor Biomarkers in Drug Resistance and Invasiveness in Primary and Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines

Marta Sanchez-Diez et al.

Summary: Protein expression profiles in cancer cells are influenced by cellular factors and can affect their plasticity, transition, and drug resistance. This study examines ten biomarkers related to these features in three colorectal cancer cell lines and investigates their resistance to oxaliplatin. The results show variations in biomarker expression and resistance due to genetic variability. Further research in this area will provide valuable insights into understanding cellular response and preventing drug resistance.

The Expression Patterns of Human Cancer-Testis Genes Are Induced through Epigenetic Drugs in Colon Cancer Cells

Mikhlid H. Almutairi et al.

Summary: The study found that epigenetic treatments such as DNA demethylation and histone deacetylation can activate the expression of X-encoded and non-X-encoded CT genes in cancer cells. These findings suggest that a subset of CT genes can be regulated by hypomethylating drugs, providing a potential therapeutic target for cancer.

The Cancer/Testis Antigen Gene VCX2 Is Rarely Expressed in Malignancies but Can Be Epigenetically Activated Using DNA Methyltransferase and Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors

Mie K. Jakobsen et al.

Summary: Identification of novel tumor-specific targets is crucial for developing immunotherapeutic strategies. VCX2, a member of the VCX/Y cancer/testis antigen family, was found to be expressed in germ cells of the testis in normal tissues and in a small subset of melanoma tumors. The expression of VCX2 is correlated with other VCX/Y genes and its activation can be induced by DNA methyltransferase inhibitor treatment, suggesting it as a potential target for cancer immunotherapy.

Overexpression of CXCL8 gene in Saudi colon cancer patients

Mahmood Rasool et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of death in Saudi Arabia, affecting both older and younger age groups. Genetic analysis identified CXCL8 as the most expressed biomarker gene in CRC, playing a crucial role in tumor progression and metastasis.
