Assessment of heavy metal accumulation in Penaeus monodon and its human health implications

Prasannajit Acharya et al.

Summary: The study found that Asian tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) in Chilika lagoon, India accumulated metals in the order of Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Cr > Pb > Cd. Metal accumulation was found to be insignificant with respect to season and sector. The estimated daily intake, targeted hazard quotient, hazard index, and carcinogenic risks indicated no potential human health risks and that the shrimp were safe for consumption. Pollution load index, Geo-accumulation index, and contamination factor revealed that the study area was unpolluted. This study highlights the healthy habitat of Chilika lagoon, where P. monodon thrives and serves as an excellent source of dietary components with a fair level of metal content.

Heavy metal toxicity, sources, and remediation techniques for contaminated water and soil

Shams Forruque Ahmed et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively reviews the technological development in arsenic (As) removal from wastewater and contaminated soil, and discusses the challenges in effective arsenic removal from the environment. Many existing technologies are not economically feasible or applicable at the community level, and some techniques produce toxic by-products. Adsorption technique has shown high efficiency in removing arsenic, but novel methods also have similar limitations to conventional techniques.

Implementing contaminated land remediation in Nigeria: Insights from the Ogoni remediation project

Kabari Sam et al.

Summary: Environmental contamination by hydrocarbons in Nigeria has led to negative effects on human health and the environment. The Nigerian Government has established the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) to manage and restore oil-contaminated land. However, HYPREP faces challenges such as bureaucracy, capacity gaps, and a weak stakeholder engagement strategy. The slow implementation of emergency measures, corruption, and lack of infrastructure for hazardous materials management are also issues. Lessons can be learned from other contaminated land management regimes to improve HYPREP's effectiveness.

Effects of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on the heavy metal influx in fiddler crab (Austruca iranica) inhabiting the marine environment of Pakistan

Asmat Saleem Siddiqui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of environmental heterogeneities on the allocation of heavy metals in fiddler crabs in the marine environment of Pakistan. The results showed spatial variations in metal accumulation in fiddler crabs, with the highest accumulation of iron, followed by zinc, copper, lead, nickel, cobalt, chromium, and cadmium. The study also found that fiddler crabs are capable of accumulating copper, cobalt, cadmium, zinc, and lead. The findings suggest that fiddler crabs are significantly contaminated with metals, and this contamination can potentially increase through the food chain.

Accumulation potential of heavy metals at different growth stages of Pacific white leg shrimp, Penaeus vannamei farmed along the Southeast coast of Peninsular India: A report on ecotoxicology and human health risk assessment

Ulaganathan Arisekar et al.

Summary: This study compared the concentration of heavy metals in water, sediment, and shrimp at different growth stages and assessed the ecotoxicological and human health risks. The results showed that the toxic metals in shrimp were below the maximum residual limits, and concentrations of copper, zinc, and arsenic were also low. Additionally, the heavy metal concentration in shrimp was positively correlated with their growth, and the consumption of shrimp cultured in this region posed no carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic health risks for Indians and Americans.

Summary: Mangroves are often cleared for various human activities, leading to impacts on water parameters and benthic community structure. The removal of mangrove canopy shade affects temperature and primary community structure. It is recommended to limit mangrove spatial loss caused by construction activities.

Summary: This study primarily discusses the increasing recognition of sustainability issues around water resource consumption under global warming and land utilization complexities, addressing the challenges in comprehending the impacts of anthropogenic activities and natural processes on surface water and groundwater systems, as well as difficulties in assessing water pollution behaviors. It focuses on the discharge of essential pollutants from industrial applications, urban development, and agricultural practices based on land-use sectors, as well as important pollutants released from natural processes in the aquatic environment.

Tracing the heavy metals zinc, lead and nickel in banana shrimp (Penaeus merguiensis) from the Persian Gulf and human health risk assessment

Mohsen Dehghani et al.

Summary: Seafood, particularly shrimp from the northern Persian Gulf, was found to have higher levels of zinc and nickel than recommended standards, posing potential carcinogenic risks with long-term consumption. However, the overall impact of all metals in shrimp was below the acceptable limit, indicating no significant health risks from daily consumption. Continuous monitoring of trace metals in seafood is necessary for ensuring food safety.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a comprehensive report on PAH pollution and human health risks in the Niger Delta, with majority of selected studies focusing on PAH pollution in aquatic environments. The findings revealed that PAH concentrations in various samples exceeded permissible limits, leading to potential cancer risks for humans. Recommendations include promoting environmentally friendly operations of oil exploration and exploitation in Nigeria, and future studies should investigate PAH pollution in farmlands, ambient air, and associated health risks.

Distributions, pollution evaluation and health risk of selected heavy metal in surface water of Taylor creek, Bayelsa State, Nigeria

Emmanuel Nwabueze Ogamba et al.

Summary: The study investigated seasonal distribution, pollution evaluation, and health risk of selected heavy metals in the surface water of Taylor creek in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Analysis showed seasonal changes in the distribution of lead, chromium, copper, and zinc, with low to moderate contamination levels and no appreciable non-carcinogenic risks identified through oral intake and dermal contact. The findings will be useful for residents and government agencies in decision-making related to water contamination by heavy metals.
