Trace metal element pollution in media from the abandoned Pb and Zn mine of Lakhouat, Northern Tunisia

Jamel Ayari et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the contamination, dispersion mechanisms, and risks of trace elements in the environmental media near an abandoned lead and zinc mine in Northern Tunisia. The results showed high concentrations of As, Cd, Hg, Pb, and Zn in mine tailings and stream sediments, which were mainly influenced by mining activities. Natural sources played a dominant role in Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zr distribution. The pollution indices indicated significant ecological and health risks, with Cd being the main driver of ecological risk and oral ingestion being the primary exposure pathway for potentially toxic elements.

Synthesis and application of graphene oxide as a nanoadsorbent to remove Cd (II) and Pb (II) from water: adsorption equilibrium, kinetics, and regeneration

Brener Felipe Melo Lima Gomes et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide (GO) was successfully synthesized and characterized, showing high potential for the adsorption of Cd (II) and Pb (II) due to its high adsorption capacity, rapid intake, and great regeneration performance. Adsorption experiments indicated that increasing adsorbent mass improved the removal efficiency of Cd (II) and Pb (II), with Freundlich isotherm better describing Pb (II) adsorption and linear behavior observed for Cd (II) isotherm. Kinetic data were satisfactorily described by pseudo-first order model for Cd (II) and pseudo-n order model for Pb (II), and GO exhibited efficiency of over 90% in five regeneration cycles.

Hydroxyapatite-based adsorbents: Applications in sequestering heavy metals and dyes

Andrew N. Amenaghawon et al.

Summary: Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a versatile material used primarily in bone regeneration and has emerged as a promising adsorbent for sequestering contaminants from wastewater, such as heavy metals and dyes. Research on HAp-based adsorbents for treating heavy metal- and dye-contaminated wastewater has become increasingly popular due to its eco-friendliness and unique adsorption properties. Studies have shown that HAp-based adsorbents are effective in sequestering heavy metals and dyes from solution, providing a low-cost option for adsorptive wastewater treatment.

Waste rock reprocessing to enhance the sustainability of phosphate reserves: A critical review

Hicham Amar et al.

Summary: The demand for phosphate continues to grow, leading to the depletion of high-grade ore resources and necessitating the exploitation and beneficiation of low-grade phosphate ores and phosphate mine waste rock (PMWR). This review discusses the recent advances in beneficiation technologies for reprocessing PMWR, including sorting, flotation, gravity separation, ore sorting, magnetic, electrostatic, and thermal separation, and hydrometallurgical methods. The findings suggest that ore sorting, gravity separation, flotation, and calcination are suitable methods for recovering phosphate from PMWR.

Summary: Contaminated soil containing toxic metals and metalloids is a global issue that poses risks to ecosystems and human health. Over the past few decades, various remediation techniques, including chemical, biological, physical, and integrated approaches, have been adopted to address this pollution. In recent years, in situ metal immobilization, plant restoration, and biological methods have emerged as the best solutions for removing metals from soil.

Zr-Based Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals for Water Remediation

Asmaa Jrad et al.

Summary: A series of Zr-based MOF UiO-66 derivatives were synthesized and modified to enhance their adsorption efficiency for toxic elements Pb(II), Cd(II), As(V), and Se(IV). The functionalization and induced cluster defects were found to increase the density of adsorption sites and improve the removal efficiency. The high-defect UiO-66-200FA exhibited higher adsorption capacities for As(V) and Se(IV) compared to the less defect UiO-66. Functional groups were found to affect the diffusion of adsorbates within the porous networks.

Iron-doped hydroxyapatite for the simultaneous remediation of lead-, cadmium- and arsenic-co-contaminated soil

Zhihui Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel iron-doped hydroxyapatite composite (Fe-HAP) was developed for the simultaneous remediation of lead-, cadmium-, and arsenic-co-contaminated soil. Fe-HAP exhibited immobilization efficiencies of 79.77%, 51.3%, and 37.5% for Pb, Cd, and As, respectively. The adsorption kinetics of Pb, Cd, and As on Fe-HAP followed a pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemisorption control. XRD, SEM, and XPS analysis confirmed the formation of stable minerals between Fe-HAP and Pb, Cd, and As. Overall, Fe-HAP showed promising potential for the remediation of co-contaminated soil.

Recycling of phosphate tailings and acid wastewater from phosphorus chemical industrial chain to prepare a high value-added magnesium oxysulfate cement

Kang Gu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method of recycling solid waste PT and acid wastewater to produce MOS cement. The results show that the phosphorus in acid water improves the compressive strength of MOS cement, while the incorporation of calcined PT improves the volume stability. This approach not only reduces the cost of waste disposal and cement production, but also benefits the environment.
