Ionic liquid assisted nanocellulose production from microcrystalline cellulose: Correlation between cellulose solubility and nanocellulose yield via COSMO-RS prediction

Gamal Abdalla Suliman Haron et al.

Summary: The use of ionic liquids in nanocellulose production has gained significant interest, but selecting suitable candidates from numerous options is challenging. In this study, the solubility of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in 300 ionic liquids was predicted using the COSMO-RS model. Experimental measurements of nanocellulose production from MCC in six ionic liquids were conducted. The results showed a negative correlation between cellulose solubility and nanocellulose yield, and one specific ionic liquid exhibited the highest yield. The study suggests that COSMO-RS prediction coupled with experimental investigation can aid in screening and classifying potential ionic liquids for nanocellulose preparation.

Recycling of deep eutectic solvent for sustainable and efficient pretreatment of corncob

Guilong Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pretreatment of corncob using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and evaluates three different recycling procedures. The results show that adding oxalic acid and removing lignin are key factors affecting the efficiency of DES reuse. After ten cycles of recycling, the pretreatment efficiency of the recycled DES does not significantly decrease compared to the original DES pretreatment, and the content of fermentation inhibitors in the enzymatic hydrolysates is not significantly increased.

High lignin-containing nanocelluloses prepared via TEMPO-mediated oxidation and polyethylenimine functionalization for antioxidant and antibacterial applications

Yisheng Sun et al.

Summary: This study focused on extracting Lignin-containing nanocelluloses (LNCs) from switchgrass pulp via TEMPO-mediated oxidation. The LNCs obtained had high aspect ratios and carboxyl contents, with zeta-potential ranging from -50.4 to -38.3 mV. The TEMPO-oxidized LNCs were further modified with PEI, showing potential antioxidant and antibacterial activities.

Nanocellulose: a bioadsorbent for chemical contaminant remediation

Mohd Nor Faiz Norrrahim et al.

Summary: Chemical contaminants, particularly heavy metals, dyes, and organic oils, pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. Nanocellulose, as a high-performance bioadsorbent, exhibits promising characteristics such as high adsorption capacity, high mechanical strength, hydrophilic surface chemistry, renewability, and biodegradability. Research has shown that nanocellulose has higher adsorption capacity and better binding affinity than other similar materials at the macroscale in the remediation of chemical contaminants.
