Two orders of magnitude extra SERS enhancement on silver nanoparticle-based substrate induced by laser irradiation in nitrogen ambient

Chen Jin et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates a method to enhance the SERS activity of conventional Ag NPs-based SERS substrates by performing Raman scattering measurement in a nitrogen ambient after a period of laser irradiation (photoactivation). The Raman characteristic peak intensity of carbonaceous impurities adsorbed on the surfaces of Ag NPs displays an additional enhancement of 93 times after photoactivation in nitrogen ambient. The extra SERS enhancement is attributed to the sub-nanometer scale near field coupling between the Ag NPs and the photo-generated Ag clusters in the surface oxide layer of Ag NPs.

FDTD Analysis of Hotspot-Enabling Hybrid Nanohole-Nanoparticle Structures for SERS Detection

Juan Gomez-Cruz et al.

Summary: In this study, a hybrid nanostructure with strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity is introduced and investigated. The nanostructure combines metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) and flow-through nanohole arrays (NHAs) to achieve collective plasmonic resonance. Computational analysis is used to determine the optimal spatial configuration of the nanoparticles and nanoapertures, and to compare the performance of silver nanoparticles on silver and gold NHAs. The results show that the hybrid nanostructures enable the formation of strong SERS-active hotspots and plasmonic enhancement, making them compatible for SERS-based sensing applications.

New Trends in Nanoarchitectured SERS Substrates: Nanospaces, 2D Materials, and Organic Heterostructures

Olga Guselnikova et al.

Summary: This article reviews recent fabrication methods for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates, focusing on advanced nanoarchitecture based on noble metals, nanolayered 2D materials, and nanoarchitecturing with organic molecules. The use of SERS has been extensively investigated for its enhanced signal intensity and the ability to detect a very small number of molecules. Nanoarchitecture strategies are crucial in the development of SERS substrates. The article discusses recent achievements in the morphology of metallic nanostructures and outlines future directions for reproducible preparation and well-controlled nanoarchitecture. The use of nanolayered 2D materials as an alternative to noble metals and the hybridization with organic molecules to improve stability and selectivity of SERS sensing are also described.

Self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles into 2D arrays at water-oil interfaces: rational construction of stable SERS substrates with accessible enhancing surfaces and tailored plasmonic response

Ziwei Ye et al.

Summary: Self-assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles at water-oil interfaces is a cost-effective and efficient method for creating highly plasmonically active materials, which can be used for strong SERS enhancement. Various methods have been developed to induce self-assembly and fine-tune surface chemistry, but only some are compatible with SERS research, where ensuring unimpeded access of target molecules to the active surface is crucial.
