Single-Junction Organic Solar Cells with 19.17% Efficiency Enabled by Introducing One Asymmetric Guest Acceptor

Rui Sun et al.

Summary: The ternary strategy is an effective approach to achieve high-efficiency OSCs, but the nonradiative voltage loss limits further efficiency improvements. By incorporating an asymmetric guest acceptor BTP-2F2Cl, the OSCs show improved photoluminescence quantum yield, exciton diffusion length, and absorption spectrum, leading to enhanced power conversion efficiency.

Scaling Considerations for Organic Photovoltaics for Indoor Applications

Gregory Burwell et al.

Summary: The key parameters for improving the efficiency of large-area indoor photovoltaic devices using drift-diffusion and finite element modeling were examined. The performance of large-area indoor photovoltaic devices at low light intensities is mainly affected by shunt resistance, rather than the sheet resistances of the transparent conductive electrodes. These findings provide an important pathway for the practical implementation of large-area organic photovoltaic cells for indoor applications.

Renewed Prospects for Organic Photovoltaics

Guichuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have undergone three stages of development, including optimizing bulk heterojunctions, improving donor-acceptor match, and developing non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). NFAs have resulted in higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) surpassing 15% due to reduced energy losses and increased quantum efficiencies. The review provides an update on recent progress in OPV technology, including novel NFAs and donors, understanding structure-property relationships, and commercialization challenges.

Fill Factor Losses and Deviations from the Superposition Principle in Lead Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

David Grabowski et al.

Summary: Two methods are presented to quantify fill factor losses in perovskite solar cells. The first method compares voltage in dark and illuminated conditions to determine voltage-dependent series resistance. The second method measures photoluminescence to determine recombination current as a function of applied voltage and explains the presence of a photoshunt.

The Influence of Photo-Induced Space Charge and Energetic Disorder on the Indoor and Outdoor Performance of Organic Solar Cells

Sebastian Beuel et al.

Summary: Organic solar cells can be used for indoor applications to power small devices, requiring thick active layers for low light intensity operation, but limited by space charge effects from charged shallow defects. Research shows that increasing light intensity leads to the accumulation of space charge, particularly affecting the performance of organic solar cells with thick active layers and substantial energetic disorder.

Progress and prospects of thick-film organic solar cells

Yilin Chang et al.

Summary: With the continuous improvements in laboratory-scale organic solar cell performances, the development of efficient OSCs with thick active layers compatible for large-area printing processes is crucial for commercialization. Despite achieving high power conversion efficiencies using non-fullerene acceptors in thin-film OSCs, thick-film OSCs still lag behind due to increased charge recombination probability. Developing highly efficient photoactive materials for thick-film OSCs to exhibit optimal charge generation and transport morphology is essential for transitioning to industrial high-throughput manufacturing.
