Application of Janus nanoparticles in enhanced oil recovery processes: Current status and future opportunities

Zahra Tohidi et al.

Summary: Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) are a new and special type of nanoparticles with two or more distinct physical properties, allowing them to have different chemical behaviors at the same time, showing great potential for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes. This study reviews the application of JNPs in EOR processes, compares JNPs with common NPs, and discusses their advantages, disadvantages, as well as their impacts on various factors affecting oil recovery. Despite numerous studies, challenges remain in utilizing JNPs in field-scale EOR operations, suggesting the need for further research in various aspects.

Upscaling calcite dissolution rates in a tight reservoir sandstone

Sina Hale et al.

Summary: This study aims to derive calcite dissolution rates in a reservoir sandstone by combining mineral surface experiments with scanning interferometry and core plug experiments. The 3D geometry of calcite cement phase inside rock cores was characterized using X-ray micro-computed tomography and was used to upscale the rates from mineral surface to core scale. The results show that the upscaled total dissolution rates were reasonably accurate, indicating the potential suitability of this method for upscaling the mineral surface rates to the core scale.

Numerical Simulation of Particle Retention Mechanisms at the Sub-Pore Scale

Saeid Sadeghnejad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the deposition of particles using pore-scale modeling and analyzed the role of clogging and surface deposition mechanisms. The results showed that increasing particle size and surface adhesion forces impaired the structure's permeability due to clogging mechanism. However, increasing surface roughness did not affect permeability. Furthermore, the study found that particle retention exhibited a maximum value around a critical velocity, indicating a transition from filter cake development to homogeneous retention.

Geochemical modelling of acid injection in high salinity sandstones at reservoir conditions

Elham Tohidi et al.

Summary: Waterflooding for enhanced oil recovery depends on various factors like makeup water properties and formation rock. A mathematical model was developed to predict pH and ion concentration during acid injection, showing the significance of fluid properties dependency on salinity and injected fluid composition. The study reveals that fluid properties play a crucial role in determining process efficiency during geochemical simulations.
