Morphological and Molecular Identification of Dactylogyrus gobiocypris (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) on Gills of a Model Fish, Gobiocypris rarus (Cypriniformes: Gobionidae)

Jiangwen Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated dactylogyrid infection in the rare minnow Gobiocypris rarus and determined the species of Dactylogyrus collected from this fish. Histopathology analysis showed that heavy dactylogyrid infection caused necrosis of gill filaments and inflammatory responses. The morphological characteristics and 18S-ITS1 rDNA sequence provided basic data for identification of this parasite species.

Dactylogyridae 2022: a meta-analysis of phylogenetic studies and generic diagnoses of parasitic flatworms using published genetic and morphological data

Nikol Kmentova et al.

Summary: In this study, a meta-analysis of the phylogenetic relationships of Dactylogyridae was conducted, including representatives of all genera with available molecular data. The research revealed the limitations of using morphological characters for genus-level classification, as well as the biases in taxonomic and citation practices. The study also highlighted the need for a comprehensive and unbiased approach to analyze DNA sequences for a better understanding of the evolutionary and biogeographical patterns in Dactylogyridae.

Parasite infection reflects host genetic diversity among non-native populations of pumpkinseed sunfish in Europe

M. Ondrackova et al.

Summary: The study reveals a clear relationship between genetic structure of non-native European pumpkinseed populations and the distribution and abundance of parasite species. Parasite community composition can serve as a useful biological tool to discriminate non-native fish populations and their inter-relationships.

Molecular and morphological phylogeny of host-specific Dactylogyrus parasites (Monogenea) sheds new light on the puzzling Middle Eastern origin of European and African lineages

Michal Benovics et al.

Summary: The study found significant diversification of Dactylogyrus species in the Middle East, with different phylogenetic lineages indicating possible convergent evolution of morphological traits in different species. The under-explored parasite diversity in many regions highlights the importance of studying host-associated parasites in the context of freshwater fish biogeography.
