A physics-constrained deep learning model for simulating multiphase flow in 3D heterogeneous porous media

Bicheng Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, an efficient physics-constrained deep learning model is developed for solving multiphase flow in 3D porous media. The model utilizes convolutional neural networks and continuity-based smoothing to accurately predict the temporal-spatial evolution of flow responses and state variables. The decomposition of the 3D domain into 2D images reduces training cost and improves efficiency. A surrogate model is also constructed for well flow rate prediction.

Salinity of flowback fracturing fluid in shale reservoir and its reservoir damage: Experimental and field study

Jiaxin Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the salinity of flowback fracturing fluid from shale gas wells and its damage to reservoirs. The results showed that the salt concentration in shale was 1 mg/g, and the salinity of flowback fluid was about 30,000 mg/L. The analysis also revealed that the content of Na+ and Cl in shale reservoir was the highest.

Multiscale and multiphase fractal model considering water reflux in shale gas extraction

Yuhao Hu et al.

Summary: Hydraulic fractures and induced fractures occur in shale reservoirs during hydraulic fracturing, and these fractures contain large amounts of water that can be recovered. By introducing fractal dimension, a multidomain and multiphase fractal model is established to study the impact of hydraulic fracturing on gas production in shale reservoirs. The results show that the correct degree of hydraulic fracturing can enhance gas production, and increasing the relative permeability of water or reducing the inlet pressure of non-wetting phase can promote the development of fractures and pores for better gas generation.

Development of shale gas production prediction models based on machine learning using early data

Wente Niu et al.

Summary: This research aims to predict the ultimate recovery of shale gas by developing machine learning models using early data, including production and flowback rate data. The importance of early production data for EUR has been analyzed quantitatively, and four schemes with various machine learning techniques have been designed to process complex patterns in the data. The results show that early production data, except for the 30-day flowback rate, is the most important factor for EUR. Choosing the most important factors leads to good prediction results.

Effects of fracturing fluid migration with clay damage after different shut-in period on shale gas production performance

Hong Zhou et al.

Summary: This study constructed a numerical model to investigate the impact of fracturing fluid migration on shale gas well productivity under different shut-in times. The results showed that the invasion depth of the fluid was extremely slow, and considering the migration caused by clay dispersion or swelling had a minor effect on gas production. Additionally, smectite swelling damage decreased absolute permeability and increased capillary pressure, negatively affecting gas production and fracturing fluid recovery efficiency. Prolonging the shut-in time mitigated the water-blocking effect and benefited gas production.
