Stimulant Drugs of Abuse and Cardiac Arrhythmias

Paari Dominic et al.

Summary: The nonmedical use of prescription and nonprescription drugs is a global epidemic with increasing deaths due to overdose and chronic use. Stimulant drugs, such as cocaine and methamphetamine, have significant effects on the cardiovascular system, including cardiac rhythm. These drugs alter the structure and electrical substrate of the heart, leading to cardiac dysrhythmias. Treatment of cardiac arrhythmias in drug abusers requires a specialized and multidisciplinary approach, due to the unique underlying mechanisms. The use of primary or secondary prevention defibrillators in drug abusers with systolic heart failure is both sensitive and controversial.

Methamphetamine exposures reported to United States poison control centers, 2000-2019

Tiffany Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the number of methamphetamine exposures in the US has shown a fluctuating increase over the past two decades, with a corresponding rise in mortality rates. Adults are the primary affected group, and cases involving exposures to multiple substances are also common.

Methamphetamine mediates apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells via the chop-related endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway

Xiaohui Tan et al.

Summary: The study found that METH can induce apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells and regulate the apoptosis process through the endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway. Chop plays an important role in the endoplasmic reticulum stress and apoptosis induced by METH, and may be a potential therapeutic target for METH-induced VSMC injury.
