An auxin-like supermolecule to simultaneously enhance growth and cumulative eicosapentaenoic acid production in Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Zhenyao Wang et al.

Summary: By synthesizing an auxin-like supermolecule (SM) for the cultivation of P. tricornutum, the cell density and biomass of P. tricornutum were significantly increased, along with an EPA content of 31.7% in the experimental group treated with 5 ppm of SM, providing a feasible strategy for efficient and cost-effective EPA production.

The Diversity Patterns of Rare to Abundant Microbial Eukaryotes Across a Broad Range of Salinities in a Solar Saltern

Hyeon Been Lee et al.

Summary: Solar salterns provide a great artificial system for studying species diversity and succession under different salinity levels. The study on the eukaryotic community in a Korean solar saltern showed that high-abundance microbial eukaryotes like Alveolata and Stramenopila dominate, while rare groups remain small during field surveys. Interestingly, the Discoba group can become a dominant group temporarily, suggesting its opportunistic nature in hypersaline environments.

Accumulation patterns of intracellular salts in a new halophilic amoeboflagellate, Euplaesiobystra salpumilio sp. nov., (Heterolobosea; Discoba) under hypersaline conditions

Hyeon Been Lee et al.

Summary: A novel halophilic microbial eukaryote, named Euplaesiobystra salpumilio, was discovered from hypersaline water. This species, belonging to the heterolobosean group, is the smallest Euplaesiobystra species known to date and exhibits a salt-out strategy for sodium and potassium extrusion under high-salinity conditions.

Kinopus chlorellivorus gen. nov., sp. nov. (Vampyrellida, Rhizaria), a New Algivorous Protist Predator Isolated from Large-Scale Outdoor Cultures of Chlorella sorokiniana

Hanwen Zhang et al.

Summary: The vampyrellids are a major group of predatory amoebae with diverse feeding strategies, playing crucial roles in suppressing soil disease and controlling aquatic algae. A new species, Kinopus chlorellivorus, was found to be a significant grazer causing losses in large-scale Chlorella cultures due to its high feeding ability on Chlorella species.

Critical assessment of protozoa contamination and control measures in mass culture of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Qing He et al.

Summary: This study identifies a heterolobosean amoeba as the most common and destructive predator in P. tricornutum cultures. The addition of 400 mg L-1 NH4HCO3 inhibits amoeba growth without significant impact on algal growth. Additionally, stopping culture mixing at night creates a hypoxia environment that further hinders amoeba growth. Consequently, the periodic supply of NH4HCO3 and the cessation of culture mixing at night can prevent or treat protozoan contamination in mass culture of P. tricornutum.
