Are Terrestrial Biosphere Models Fit for Simulating the Global Land Carbon Sink?

Christian Seiler et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of terrestrial biosphere models in reproducing the processes that drive the terrestrial carbon sink. While there is reasonable agreement between model output and reference data, improvements are still needed, such as reducing biases in leaf area index and improving the representation of processes governing soil organic carbon.

Climate Sensitivities of Carbon Turnover Times in Soil and Vegetation: Understanding Their Effects on Forest Carbon Sequestration

Rong Ge et al.

Summary: The high uncertainty associated with the response of terrestrial carbon (C) cycle to climate is dominated by the ecosystem C turnover time. The differences in climate sensitivities of turnover time in major biomass and soil pools are poorly understood, and their effects on vegetation and soil C sequestration under climate change remain unclear. This study conducted observations and model-data fusion in Chinese forests to explore the relationship between climate and turnover time. It was found that both vegetation and soil turnover time decreased with increasing temperature and precipitation, and soil turnover time was more sensitive than vegetation turnover time. The smaller balance between soil C input and exit rate under warm and humid conditions suggests a relatively lower contribution from soil C sequestration.

Assimilation of Global Satellite Leaf Area Estimates Reduces Modeled Global Carbon Uptake and Energy Loss by Terrestrial Ecosystems

Andrew M. Fox et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of leaf area estimation errors on carbon, water, and energy exchange in global land surface models (LSMs). A data assimilation approach is used to assess the efficacy of refining these flux processes and to evaluate the model's estimations against global estimates. The results show that the current model has a bias in leaf area estimation, which may confound efforts to improve these flux processes.

CARDAMOM-FluxVal version 1.0: a FLUXNET-based validation system for CARDAMOM carbon and water flux estimates

Yan Yang et al.

Summary: Uncertainty in land-atmosphere carbon and water exchanges in terrestrial biosphere models is a major challenge. The CARDAMOM framework has been successful in improving the accuracy of carbon and water flux predictions by assimilating observed data. In this study, a benchmarking framework for evaluating the performance of CARDAMOM in estimating carbon and water fluxes is developed using the FLUXNET 2015 dataset. Results show that CARDAMOM performs well in representing and predicting the variability of assimilated observations. This benchmarking system can facilitate model intercomparison and further development of CARDAMOM.

Information content of soil hydrology in a west Amazon watershed as informed by GRACE

Elias C. Massoud et al.

Summary: In this study, the capability of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (NASA-GRACE) measurements to inform and constrain key parameters in soil hydrologic models is quantitatively characterized. The data-constrained terrestrial water storage model captures the basic physics of the hydrologic cycle and accurately simulates the annual and interannual variability of the system. Reductions in uncertainty for various parameters and state variables are also demonstrated. The results suggest the potential of using gravimetric observations of total water storage to improve the accuracy of land surface models.

Parameter uncertainty dominates C-cycle forecast errors over most of Brazil for the 21st century

Summary: Identification of terrestrial carbon sources and sinks is crucial for understanding the Earth system and addressing climate change. Uncertainty in predictions of future dynamics has been assessed using multi-model comparisons, revealing that parameter uncertainty dominates when simulating changes in biomass and dead organic matter.
