Summary: A high percentage of children treated for cancer experience suicidal ideation and related neurocognitive issues, highlighting the need for screening and further assessment in this population. There is a significant relationship between suicidal ideation and impairments in global executive composite scores, as well as inattention symptoms in parents of children with suicidal ideation. Intellectual and executive function performance did not show differences between those with and without suicidal ideation.

Suicide risk and mortality among patients with cancer

Summary: Despite substantial progress in cancer therapy, patients with cancer still face a high risk of suicide. This study comprehensively assessed the suicide mortality risk in cancer patients and found a significantly increased risk compared to the general population. The risk was strongly related to cancer prognosis, stage, time since diagnosis, and geographic region. Therefore, cancer patients, especially those with specific risk factors, should be closely monitored for suicidality and receive specialized care to reduce the risks of suicide.

Association of Low-Grade Glioma Diagnosis and Management Approach with Mental Health Disorders: A MarketScan Analysis 2005-2014

Summary: Low-grade gliomas (LGGs) account for 13-16% of glial tumors. The incidence, prevalence, and risk factors of mental health disorders (MHD) in LGG patients were investigated in this retrospective cohort study. Among 20,432 LGG patients, 60.9% had MHD, with 16.9% of patients developing new-onset MHD within 12 months of LGG diagnosis. Risk factors included female gender, ages 35-54, presence of seizures, and first-line surgical treatment. Proactive surveillance and counseling for MHDs are recommended, as well as consideration of the impact of surgery on brain networks affecting mood.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the suicide rates and identify risk factors for suicide among patients with malignant intracranial tumors. The study found that the suicide mortality among these patients has steadily increased in the past decades. Male sex, older age, and supratentorial location were significantly associated with the risk of suicide, particularly within the first year following diagnosis.
