Surface-Seal Encapsulation of a Homogeneous Catalyst in a Mesoporous Metal-Organic Framework

Dongxu Wang et al.

Summary: A rapid surface sealing strategy has been developed to encapsulate a homogeneous catalyst in a mesoporous metal-organic framework. The method allows the formation of a sub-10 nm, uniform, and cross-linked polymer coating within seconds, while preserving the catalytic activity.

Targeted conversion of model phenolics in pyrolysis bio-oils to arenes via hydrodeoxygenation over MoOx/BaO@SBA-15 catalyst

Hongzi Tan et al.

Summary: Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an effective strategy to upgrade lignin-derived bio-oils into high value-added chemicals such as arenes. However, the challenge lies in selective hydrogenolysis of oxygen-containing groups while keeping the unsaturated aromatic rings intact. In this study, a catalyst with rich oxygen defects was synthesized to induce nonplanar adsorption of phenolics, weakening the C-Ar-OR bonds and preventing excessive hydrogenation of aromatic rings. The addition of BaO coating promoted the adsorption of phenol and enhanced the one-step HDO of guaiacol into benzene and toluene.

Copper Clusters Encapsulated in Carbonaceous Mesoporous Silica Nanospheres for the Valorization of Biomass-Derived Molecules

Fujun Lan et al.

Summary: In this study, N-doped carbon-coated mesoporous silica spheres encapsulated ultra-dispersed copper cluster catalysts were prepared using an air-assisted low-temperature carbonization strategy. The catalysts exhibited excellent performance and stability in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid and showed high hydrogenation activities for various organic compounds.

Paired-Pd(II) centers embedded in HKUST-1 framework: Tuning the selectivity from dimethyl carbonate to dimethyl oxalate

Hong-Zi Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, catalysts with paired-Pd(II) centers and isolated-Pd(II) centers were constructed on HKUST-1 support, showing different selectivity towards dimethyl oxalate (DMO) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) production, highlighting the importance of Pd species spatial state in catalytic selectivity. This work represents the first MOFs-based catalyst with a well-defined structure to be applied in the CO oxidative coupling reaction, demonstrating the potential of using MOFs as a tunable platform for designing high-efficient catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.

Anchoring strategy for highly active copper nanoclusters in hydrogenation of renewable biomass-derived compounds

Fujun Lan et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient strategy for anchoring highly active copper nanocluster catalysts on graphitic carbon nitride and dispersing in mesoporous silica, resulting in high conversion of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone with excellent stability. The research provides a simple anchoring strategy for constructing highly active and inexpensive copper nanocluster catalysts, which exhibit comparable performance to Ru/AC catalysts but more economically favorable.

In Situ Implanting of Single Tungsten Sites into Defective UiO-66(Zr) by Solvent-Free Route for Efficient Oxidative Desulfurization at Room Temperature

Gan Ye et al.

Summary: The study presents a green one-pot method for in situ implanting single tungsten sites into the nodes of defective UiO-66(Zr) structure, achieving high catalytic activity for the oxidative removal of sulfur compounds at room temperature. Anchored tungsten sites react readily with oxidants to generate intermediates that determine the reaction activity.

Levulinic acid hydrogenation to γ-valerolactone over single Ru atoms on a TiO2@nitrogen doped carbon support

Kaili Zhang et al.

Summary: By designing and preparing a Ru single-atom catalyst, the conversion of levulinic acid into gamma-valerolactone with high activity, selectivity, and stability at room temperature in water was achieved. The turnover frequency (TOF) was increased by 35 times compared to commercial Ru/C, and only gamma-valerolactone was produced over the catalyst in this study.
