Bioinspired Superwettable Catheters with Tunable Structural Color for Efficient Drug Release Monitoring

Zhijun Jiang et al.

Summary: Medical interventional catheters are essential devices that are revolutionizing clinical applications in various specialties. However, challenges still exist in terms of antibiofilm properties and effective drug delivery. Inspired by nature, a bioinspired superwettable catheter has been developed using inverse opal photonic crystals hydrogel. This catheter features a slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) that changes the motion state of droplets. The catheter's tunable structural color and drug release properties, achieved through the expansion and contraction of the hydrogel, allow it to report and quantitatively feedback on the drug release process. With excellent antibacterial performance and drug release monitoring capabilities, this multifunctional superwettable catheter holds great promise in biomedical applications.

Improved Liquid Collection on a Dual-Asymmetric Superhydrophilic Origami

Haoyu Bai et al.

Summary: Manipulating fluid with an open channel simplifies systems, but on-surface fluid transport remains challenging. Inspired by scallop shells, a shell-like superhydrophilic origami with multiple channels is presented to improve fluid collection and transport. The origami can capture and transport various types of liquids unidirectionally, with a maximum flux five times that of a flat surface. Additionally, a superhydrophobic coating is integrated for enhanced condensation, resulting in a 56% improvement in efficiency compared to unmodified origami.

Biomimicking integrates peristome surface of Nepenthes alata onto biliary stents tips

Mingtian Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a slippery surface was prepared using inverse opal colloidal crystals hydrogels, inspired by the microstructures of Nepenthes alata's peristome surface and Morpho menelaus, for biliary stents (BS) tips, which showed anti-adhesion and antibacterial properties. The drug release from the slippery surface could be controlled by changing the temperature, and the process could be monitored visually through structural color variations. Furthermore, a mechanism of droplet infiltration on the slippery surfaces under heating was proposed, which could be used for smart droplet transport. These multifunctional slippery BS tips exhibited good generalization and could bring more possibilities for biliary stents.
