The Intrinsic Thermodynamic Difficulty and a Step-Guided Mechanism for the Epitaxial Growth of Uniform Multilayer MoS2 with Controllable Thickness

Ruikang Dong et al.

Summary: A step-guided mechanism for the growth of uniform multilayer MoS2 on an epitaxial substrate is proposed. The simultaneous nucleation of multilayer MoS2 with aligned edges and uniform thickness can be guided by steps with proper height on the sapphire surface, promoting the continuous growth of multilayer MoS2 films.

Uniform nucleation and epitaxy of bilayer molybdenum disulfide on sapphire

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports the successful nucleation of bilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) on c-plane sapphire, achieving uniformity in the nucleation process. The design of atomic terrace height on c-plane sapphire allows for an edge-nucleation mechanism and the coalescence of MoS2 domains into continuous, centimeter-scale films. Field-effect transistor devices based on bilayer MoS2 channels show improved mobility and reduced variation compared to monolayer films.

Cationic vacancies as defects in honeycomb lattices with modular symmetries

Godwill Mbiti Kanyolo et al.

Summary: Layered materials exhibit interesting crystalline symmetries and topological characteristics. The diffusion dynamics of ions in honeycomb lattices are influenced by external electric fields, topological defects, curvatures, and vacancies. The study of these dynamics can offer insights into molecular behavior and the role of quantum geometry in diffusion processes.

Free-standing 2D ironene with magnetic vortex structure at room temperature

Wei Li et al.

Summary: This study discusses the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) elemental transition metal nanoflakes using a Te-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The obtained 2D ironene, with different thicknesses, exhibits thickness and geometrical shape-dependent magnetic domain structure. Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) confirms the interesting domain configuration and in situ magnetic domain manipulation. This work provides valuable insights for the synthesis of 2D elemental transition metal nanoflakes with room-temperature ferromagnetism.

Antiferromagnetic half-skyrmions and bimerons at room temperature

Hariom Jani et al.

Summary: In the quest for post-CMOS technologies, researchers have shown promising results in experimenting with topologically protected ferromagnetic whirls such as skyrmions and their anti-particles, which can serve as solitonic information carriers. Antiferromagnetic analogues have become the subject of intense focus due to their predicted relativistic dynamics and potential for fast deflection-free motion and size scaling, although experimental demonstration in natural antiferromagnetic systems has yet to be achieved. By utilizing a first-order analogue of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, a family of topological antiferromagnetic spin textures has been stabilized on an Earth-abundant oxide insulator, showing potential for low-energy antiferromagnetic spintronics at room temperature.

Strong intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in freestanding non-van der Waals ultrathin 2D crystals

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: A scalable method has been developed to prepare freestanding non-van der Waals ultrathin 2D crystals, leading to the discovery of strong, ambient-air-robust room-temperature ferromagnetism in freestanding non-van der Waals 2D CrTe crystals. These freestanding 2D CrTe crystals show comparable or even better ferromagnetic properties than commonly used Fe, Co, Ni, and BaFe12O19, making them promising as new platforms for intrinsically ferromagnetic 2D crystals at room temperature and integrated 2D devices.

Friction of magnetene, a non-van der Waals 2D material

Peter Serles et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional materials are known for their low-friction interfaces, with van der Waals bonding being a major factor. However, nanoscale and quantum confinement effects can also play a role in modifying the atomic interactions of 2D materials, resulting in unique interfacial properties. Magnetene, a non-vdW 2D material obtained through the exfoliation of magnetite, demonstrates low-friction behavior similar to benchmark vdW 2D materials due to 2D confinement effects that minimize potential energy surface corrugation, reduce surface adsorbates, and restrict low-damping phonon modes.
