Microbiome and Metabolomics in Liver Cancer: Scientific Technology

Raja Ganesan et al.

Summary: Primary liver cancer is a heterogeneous disease characterized by the reprogramming of cellular metabolism to promote cancer cell proliferation and adapt to the tumor microenvironment. Metabolomics and metabolite profiling have emerged as important tools for cancer diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy in liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This review highlights the interaction between liver diseases and metabolic processes at the cellular and systemic levels, with a focus on current metabolomics technologies and their applications in clinical and translational research. The identification of liver cancer biomarkers and the development of novel therapeutic strategies are important drivers of metabolomics science.

Distinct metabolic hallmarks of WHO classified adult glioma subtypes

Benny Bjorkblom et al.

Summary: This study identifies key metabolic features that can differentiate between glioma subtypes, providing potential for improved diagnostics and subtype targeted therapy. Metabolic differences exist across adult glioma subtypes, with clear distinctions between IDH-mutated and IDH-wildtype subtypes. Additionally, other metabolic heterogeneity is observed, which may be associated with tumor growth and hypoxic features.

Metabolomic Signatures in Doxorubicin-Induced Metabolites Characterization, Metabolic Inhibition, and Signaling Pathway Mechanisms in Colon Cancer HCT116 Cells

Raja Ganesan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Doxorubicin (DOX) on colon cancer cells and its impact on metabolic phenotypes. Using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, it is found that DOX exposure significantly alters the metabolic expression of HCT116 colon cancer cells, revealing a metabolite pool and phenotypic expression in colon cancer cells for the first time. Targeting the DOX-metabolite axis may serve as a novel strategy to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of DOX-based therapy for colon cancer cells.

Proteins moonlighting in tumor metabolism and epigenetics

Lei Lv et al.

Summary: The development of cancer is a complex process controlled by multiple signaling pathways and restricted by the availability of oxygen and nutrients in the tumor microenvironment. Cancer cells exhibit high plasticity in utilizing diverse nutrients to adapt to metabolic stress and reprogram their metabolic pathways for rapid cell proliferation. Targeting the signal-moonlighting protein-metabolism axis may provide therapeutic opportunities for cancer treatment.
