Individual behavioral activation in the treatment of depression: A meta analysis

Pim Cuijpers et al.

Summary: Behavioral activation (BA) is a simple and effective therapy for depression that aims to increase positive interactions between individuals and their environment. Previous meta-analyses have focused on BA in groups and guided self-help, but this study examines BA in individual psychotherapy. The results show that individual BA has a large effect on distal treatment outcomes, making it a valuable and versatile therapy option.

Clinical characteristics of late-life depression predicting mortality

Karen S. van den Berg et al.

Summary: Depression in older adults is associated with increased mortality rates, with only minor depression showing a significant risk for mortality independent of lifestyle factors and multiple drug prescriptions. Unhealthy lifestyle characteristics and the number of prescribed medications may explain the higher mortality risk in depressed older individuals, while minor depression may indicate an alternative pathway towards mortality in this population.

Preventing depression among older people living in rural areas: A randomised controlled trial of behavioural activation in collaborative care

Osvaldo P. Almeida et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test if a behavioural activation (BA) programme was more effective than usual care at reducing the risk of major depression among adults aged 65 years or older living in rural Western Australia. The results showed significant improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms, as well as mental health-related quality of life among participants who received the BA intervention over 52 weeks.

The effects of psychotherapies for depression on response, remission, reliable change, and deterioration: A meta-analysis

Pim Cuijpers et al.

Summary: This study summarized the effectiveness of psychotherapies for depression, finding that some patients benefit from treatment, but over half of patients do not respond and only about one third experience remission. More effective treatments and strategies are needed to improve outcomes for depression therapy.
