Diversity-induced resonance in a globally coupled bistable system with diversely distributed heterogeneity

Cong Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that a moderate degree of diversity can significantly enhance the collective response of coupled extended systems. It demonstrates that the standard deviation and the ratio of negative entities jointly modulate diversity-induced resonance, and the coexistence of negative and positive entities is a prerequisite for this resonant behavior.

Amplitude response, Melnikov's criteria, and chaos occurrence in a Duffing's system subjected to an external periodic excitation with a variable shape

Frank T. Ndjomatchoua et al.

Summary: This study examines the nonlinear dynamics of a Duffing oscillator under a symmetric potential and pulse-type excitation with a deformable shape. The frequency-response curve shows numerous resonance peaks and anti-resonance peaks, with a resonance phenomenon called shape-induced-resonance occurring solely due to changes in the external forcing shape parameter. The system exhibits amplitude jumps and hysteresis depending on the parameter, and chaos occurrence is investigated using Melnikov's method. Numerical analysis and simulations show that the threshold amplitude for observing chaotic dynamics decreases/increases for small/large values of the parameter r. The theoretical estimates are in agreement with the numerical and electronic simulations. Published under an exclusive license by AIP Publishing.

Impact of basic network motifs on the collective response to perturbations

Xiaoge Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of network motifs on the processes of perturbations propagation and network response dynamics. The results indicate that basic motifs along the propagation path jointly determine the proposed scaling regimes and provide a deeper understanding of the interplay of self-dynamics, interaction dynamics, and topological properties.

Stochastic resonance in coupled star-networks with power-law heterogeneity

Shilong Gao et al.

Summary: The paper demonstrates the influence of power-law heterogeneity of coupling coefficients on the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the central oscillator in coupled star-network. By creatively constructing a random variable to model the heterogeneity, it is found that the degree of heterogeneity of coupling coefficients can be measured by the entropy of random variables. Numerical simulations reveal the division of parameter space into different regions based on the output SNR, with discussions on the optimal SNR and power exponent in each region. The physical mechanism is explained based on stochastic resonance (SR) theory.

Signal amplification enhanced by large phase disorder in coupled bistable units

Xiaoming Liang et al.

Summary: The study finds that for signals with significant phase disorder, networks exhibit enhanced response at intermediate coupling strength, mainly dependent on signal intensity and capable of suppressing synchronization of units, leading to resonancelike response. This phenomenon is robust to unit bistability, initial phase distribution, and signal waveform, demonstrating the potential benefit of phase disorder on signal amplification in complex systems.
