Sustainable nitrogen removal in anammox-mediated systems: Microbial metabolic pathways, operational conditions and mathematical modelling

Hussein E. Al-Hazmi et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of understanding microbial metabolism in anammox-mediated systems and their potential applications in sustainable nitrogen removal from wastewater. Various processes, including PN-A, SNAD, PD-A, and DAMO-A, have shown efficient N removal in different wastewater treatment scenarios. The review also discusses the production of N2O in anammox-based processes and how it relates to certain bacteria. Additionally, mathematical models and promising NO3- reduction technologies are discussed. Overall, this review provides valuable insights into sustainable N removal in anammox-mediated systems, encouraging further research in this field.

Combined partial denitrification/anammox process for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment

Hussein E. Al-Hazmi et al.

Summary: Recently, the combined partial denitrification and anammox (PD/anammox) process using organic matter in municipal wastewater has gained attention for sustainable N removal. It offers advantages such as reduced dissolved oxygen demand, lower organic carbon requirement, less excess sludge production, and lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional nitrification-denitrification. This review discusses the latest improvements in PD/anammox systems and focuses on the production/consumption pathways of critical intermediate NO2-. The C/N ratio and concentration of dosed organic carbon are crucial for optimal efficiency, as overgrowth of denitrifying bacteria can negatively impact anammox activity. Microorganism competition in single-stage PD/anammox systems plays a key role in achieving efficient N removal from mainstream wastewater. Challenges and limitations in recognizing inhibition mechanisms and performance inhibitors are also addressed. Future research should explore combining PD/anammox with other processes and developing self-supporting bacterial systems to enhance total nitrogen removal efficiency.

Biological Degradation of the Azo Dye Basic Orange 2 by Escherichia coli: A Sustainable and Ecofriendly Approach for the Treatment of Textile Wastewater

Muhammad Ikram et al.

Summary: The study found that Escherichia coli showed a high potential in degrading the dye, and certain physicochemical parameters significantly affected its degradation capability. The proposed mechanism of dye degradation by Escherichia coli was deduced from the analysis of the metabolites. These findings are of great importance for the treatment of textile effluents containing azo dyes.

Stable and rapid partial nitrification achieved by boron stimulating autoinducer-2 mediated quorum sensing at room & low temperature

Huizhi Hu et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of boron as an activator to promote partial nitrification and improve sludge properties. The results show that boron significantly increases the concentration of AI-2 in the reactor, and high concentrations of boron have better performance at two temperatures. Partial nitrification is achieved mainly through the accumulation of NO2--N facilitated by the increase in AI-2 concentration. Boron has no significant effect on AOB but inhibits NOB, especially at room temperature. EPS changes were also observed at the two temperatures. This study provides a new strategy for the rapid and stable initiation of partial nitrification.

Integrating conventional nitrogen removal with anammox in wastewater treatment systems: Microbial metabolism, sustainability and challenges

Hussein E. Al-Hazmi et al.

Summary: This review comprehensively presents and discusses the latest advances in nitrogen removal technologies from wastewaters, including traditional nitrification-denitrification and anammox-based systems. It focuses on the understanding of microbial community characteristics and optimization of operation parameters in anammox-based systems. The sustainability of BNR processes in wastewater treatment is evaluated using important indicators such as GWP, CF, and energy behaviors. The challenges and solutions for BNR processes are extensively discussed.

Biodegradation of Brown 706 Dye by Bacterial Strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Asad Ullah Khan et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed the highest decolorization activity for Brown 706 dye, reaching 73.91% decolorization efficiency under optimal conditions. Metabolites formed after degradation were analyzed using UV-Vis, FTIR, and NMR techniques, identifying the presence of P-xylene as a result of bacteria catalyzing the breakdown of azo linkages.

Recent advances in adsorption and coagulation for boron removal from wastewater: A comprehensive review

Jui-Yen Lin et al.

Summary: The anthropogenic emission of boron to rivers has posed a serious threat to water quality and ecosystems, but can be effectively removed through adsorption and coagulation methods. Boron sources mainly include coal-fired and geothermal power plants, as well as oil/gas extraction activities. Various types of adsorbents and coagulants, reaction mechanisms, progress in the past 5 years, and future research prospects and improvements have been discussed comprehensively in this review.
