Sulfamethoxazole degradation by Aeromonas caviae and co-metabolism by the mixed bacteria

Qiaoning Wang et al.

Summary: Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a commonly found antibiotic in the environment, is efficiently degraded by a mixed bacteria community including Aeromonas caviae strain GLB-10. In addition to the bioproducts generated by single bacteria, the mixed bacteria produce acetanilide and hydroquinone during SMX degradation. The degradation mechanism of the mixed bacteria is more complex and involves acetylation, sulfur reduction 4S pathway, and ipso-hydrolysis. The molecular mechanism reveals the overexpression of outer membrane proteins and catalase peroxidase, as well as the involvement of 6-hydroxynicotinate 3-monooxygenase.

Synergistic removal of sulfamethoxazole and dimethyl phthalate by five constructed wetland substrates

Guowan Li et al.

Summary: The frequent detection and joint toxicity of sulfonamides (SAs) and phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in the water environment pose serious health and safety problems. Vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) provides a solution for reducing these problems. This study investigated the synergistic removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and dimethyl phthalate (DMP) using various substrates in VFCW. Results showed that biochar, zeolite, vermiculite, peat, and sand exhibited excellent synergistic adsorption of SMX and DMP, providing an effective method to remove these substances.

Disturbances in growth, oxidative stress, energy reserves and the expressions of related genes in Daphnia magna after exposure to ZnO under thermal stress

Paweena Sanpradit et al.

Summary: The effects of ZnO concentration under elevated temperature on growth, oxidative stress, and gene expression in exposed Daphnia magna were investigated in this study. The results showed that elevated temperature and increased ZnO concentration induced toxicity in D. magna, affecting their growth and energy reserves, with minimal effects on juveniles. This study highlights the potential use of D. magna as a bioindicator for monitoring environmental change.

Short and long-term exposure to the pesticides fipronil and 2,4-D: Effects on behavior and life history of Daphnia magna

Raquel A. Moreira et al.

Summary: The high contamination levels caused by pesticides make aquatic ecosystems vulnerable. Mobile organisms can avoid continuous exposure to contaminants by moving to less disturbed habitats. This study used a system called HeMHAS to evaluate the ability of Daphnia magna to detect and avoid habitats contaminated by specific pesticides. The colonization of habitats and chronic toxicity were also assessed for different parameters. The results showed that D. magna did not prefer less contaminated areas and did not move to highly contaminated zones. Additionally, exposure to a mixture of pesticides significantly prevented colonization, and negative consequences on survival, fecundity, and body length were observed with chronic exposure to a specific pesticide. The study suggests that the risk of local population extinction may be underestimated if only forced exposure endpoints are examined.

Toxic effects and molecular mechanisms of sulfamethoxazole on Scenedesmus obliquus

Dongmei Xu et al.

Summary: The antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) has been found to have biotoxic effects on Scenedesmus obliquus, an aquatic organism. Exposure to SMX promotes gene expression, leading to changes in algal cell ultrastructure. These changes include blurred cell walls, damaged chloroplast structure, and increased number and volume of mitochondria per cell. The effects of SMX on gene expression are related to inhibition of cell growth, decrease in chlorophyll content, increase in cell membrane permeability, production of reactive oxygen species, increased lipid peroxidation, and higher activities of antioxidant enzymes. The abnormal expression of non-coding RNAs may be an important mechanism underlying the carcinogenic effects of SMX.

Occurrence and ecotoxicity of sulfonamides in the aquatic environment: A review

Weiyan Duan et al.

Summary: Rapid population growth and increasing demand for animal protein food have led to a continuous increase in global utilization of antibiotic, specifically sulfonamides (SAs), which are found to be ubiquitous in aquatic environments and pose a potential ecological risk. Research on different trophic level organisms shows that algae are the most susceptible to selected sulfonamide antibiotics, and some of these antibiotics pose a great risk to the aquatic system.

Toxicity Assessment of an Anti-Cancer Drug of p-Toluene Sulfonamide in Zebrafish Larvae Based on Cardiovascular and Locomotion Activities

Andrew Yau Wah Young et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential cardio and neural toxicity of p-Toluene sulfonamide (p-TSA) in sublethal concentrations using zebrafish as an in vivo animal model. The results showed that the overall toxicity of p-TSA was relatively low in zebrafish larvae, with minor alterations observed in the cardiac rhythm and physiology. However, acute exposure to p-TSA significantly increased locomotion activity, while prolonged exposure reduced the locomotor startle reflex activities in zebrafish. The study also revealed higher respiratory rate and blood flow velocity in acutely treated fish groups. Molecular docking analysis provided insights into the potential molecular mechanism of p-TSA on observed altered responses and minor altered vascular performance in zebrafish larvae.

Summary: Food security has become a major concern due to recent food safety incidents. The widespread use of 2,3-butanedione as a food additive poses significant risk to food security. This study found that 2,3-butanedione has adverse effects at the cellular and molecular levels, disrupting the redox balance of cells, causing mitochondrial dysfunction, and resulting in cell apoptosis and death.

Zebrafish as a Screening Model to Study the Single and Joint Effects of Antibiotics

Roxana Jijie et al.

Summary: The excessive use of antibiotics and the limit of wastewater treatment facilities have resulted in drug residue accumulation in the natural environment, raising concerns over potential harmful effects on ecosystems and human health. Zebrafish has emerged as a promising animal model for studying the toxic effects of drugs and their therapeutic efficacy due to limitations of traditional vertebrate model systems. Despite significant literature on the impact of single antibiotic exposure, there is little information on the effects of antibiotic mixtures using zebrafish as an animal model.

Summary: Microplastics are predicted to act as carriers for organic pollutants, but their carrier role and bio-toxic effects with other pollutants in environments are poorly acknowledged. This study investigated the effects of polyethylene (PE) and 9-Nitroanthracene (9-NAnt) on zebrafish, showing that PE could carry 9-NAnt into fish causing bioaccumulation, but in the case of coexisting exposures, PE reduced 9-NAnt bioaccumulation. The study suggests that microplastics with other emerging pollutants in chronic toxicity are probably next objects in future works.
