Report Recording electrical activity from the brain of behaving octopus

Tamar Guntick et al.

Summary: Octopuses are highly intelligent invertebrates with no skeleton, possessing eight flexible arms that are controlled by a complex central nervous system. Their brain contains numerous distinct lobes and a large number of neurons, and by implanting electrodes, we have successfully recorded their brain activity and synchronized it with their behavior using a portable data logger.

Magnetic concentric tube robots: introduction and analysis

Quentin Peyron et al.

Summary: In this study, a new type of continuum robot called a magnetic concentric tube robot (M-CTR) is proposed for performing minimally invasive surgery in narrow and difficult-to-access areas. By combining concentric tubes and magnetic actuation, the robot achieves 'follow the leader' behavior, dexterity, and stability, while targeting millimeter-sized external diameters. Numerical and experimental studies on a M-CTR prototype are conducted to assess these three kinematic properties. The prototype demonstrates unique capabilities in deployment and active stability management, and its dexterity in tip orientability is among the best in robots of its scale.

Diffusion MRI Connections in the Octopus Brain

Russell E. Jacobs

Summary: By using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with fiber tractography analysis, we have mapped a meso-scale connectome of the Octopus bimaculoides brain. Despite having a qualitatively different organization than that of vertebrates, the octopus brain exhibits complex behavior, an elaborate sensory system, and high cognitive abilities.

How intelligent is a cephalopod? Lessons from comparative cognition

Alexandra K. Schnell et al.

Summary: Cephalopods, such as octopus, cuttlefish, and squid, are considered the most cognitively advanced group of invertebrates, displaying highly developed perception, learning, memory, and behavioral flexibility. Hypotheses for the emergence of complex cognition in cephalopods suggest that predation, foraging, and competitive pressures may have driven cognitive complexity in these animals. However, current research on cephalopod cognition is largely based on anecdotal evidence, and more studies are needed to understand the underlying mechanisms driving their behaviors.

Identification and Characterization of a Rhodopsin Kinase Gene in the Suckers of Octopus vulgaris: Looking around Using Arms?

Al-Sayed Al-Soudy et al.

Summary: Octopus arms are a fascinating sensory organ with tactile, chemical, and potentially light-sensing capabilities. The highly innervated suckers along the arms show differences in mRNA expression, suggesting functional diversity. This study provides a comprehensive characterization of a light-sensing molecule in the suckers, skin, and retina of Octopus vulgaris, revealing the multimodal sensing abilities of octopus arms.
