An Open-Source and Wearable System for Measuring 3D Human Motion in Real-Time

Patrick Slade et al.

Summary: This article introduces an open-source wearable system, OpenSenseRT, that can estimate upper and lower extremity kinematics in real time. Compared to optical motion capture, the system has lower cost and simple replication, and achieves similar accuracy. The system enables movement analysis in clinics, homes, and free-living settings.

Sensor network oriented human motion capture via wearable intelligent system

Sen Qiu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method to improve the accuracy of human motion capture systems using inertial measurement units mounted on the foot to simultaneously reconstruct human body attitude and displacement. The system distributes multiple sensor nodes on key human limbs, utilizes a zero-speed update algorithm and gradient descent method to achieve synchronous reconstruction of posture and displacement.

OpenSense: An open-source toolbox for inertial-measurement-unit-based measurement of lower extremity kinematics over long durations

Mazen Al Borno et al.

Summary: This study developed an open-source workflow to estimate lower extremity joint kinematics from IMU data and mitigate drift. The results showed that the IMU-based kinematic estimates agreed with the optical motion capture, and the drift was minimal over 10 minutes of continuous walking. The workflow could enable long-duration measurements and brings us closer to estimating kinematics in natural environments.
