Differences in bioavailability and cognitive-enhancing activity exerted by different crystal polymorphs of latrepirdine (Dimebon®)

Boris I. Gorin et al.

Summary: In this study, the pharmacokinetic characteristics and cognitive-enhancing nootropic activity of latrepirdine (Dimebon(R)) were investigated in relation to its polymorphic forms in SD and Wistar rats. The highest bioavailability in both blood and brain was observed with polymorph E, which also exhibited the highest cognitive-enhancing activity. These findings suggest that polymorph E could be a promising drug for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases associated with memory impairment, such as Alzheimer's disease.

Cognitive improvement effect of nervonic acid and essential fatty acids on rats ingesting Acer truncatum Bunge seed oil revealed by lipidomics approach

Wangting Song et al.

Summary: The study found that Acer truncatum Bunge seed oil has a positive effect on rat memory. Supplementation of this oil resulted in changes in lipid profiling and activation of pathways related to memory and cognition improvement. The synergistic effects of omega-9 fatty acids were observed, suggesting that their conversion may enhance cognitive abilities.

Nervonic Acid Attenuates Accumulation of Very Long-Chain Fatty Acids and is a Potential Therapy for Adrenoleukodystrophy

Marcia R. Terluk et al.

Summary: Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is an inherited disorder characterized by accumulation of very long-chain fatty acids. We investigated nervonic acid as a potential therapy for ALD and found that it can reverse lipid accumulation and protect cells from oxidative damage. This suggests that nervonic acid could be a therapeutic option for ALD.

Summary: This study investigates the potential effects of Acer truncatum oil on remyelination in a cuprizone mouse model of demyelination. The results show that diet supplementation with Acer truncatum oil can attenuate demyelination induced by cuprizone, indicating that Acer truncatum oil may be a novel therapeutic diet for demyelinating diseases.

Do Levels of Lipid Peroxidation Biomarkers Reflect the Degree of Brain Injury in Newborns?

Mari Merce Cascant-Vilaplana et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, identifying an increase in oxidative stress biomarkers over time and a decrease in prostaglandin levels. MRI findings reveal correlations between oxidative stress levels and brain lesion patterns, while gender does not significantly impact biomarker concentrations. Monitoring noninvasive lipid peroxidation biomarkers may aid in diagnosis and predicting outcomes for HIE patients.

Brain cooling reduces the risk of postneonatal epilepsy in newborns affected by moderate to severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

Summary: Severe neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy with extensive lesions in basal ganglia and thalami plus cortical and white matter lesions carries a high risk for early and severe postneonatal epilepsy. Furthermore, therapeutic hypothermia is associated with a decreased risk of developing postneonatal epilepsy.
