Comprehensive Picture of the Excited State Dynamics of Cu(I)- and Ru(II)-Based Photosensitizers with Long-Lived Triplet States

Miguel A. Argueello Cordero et al.

Summary: Ru(II)- and Cu(I)-based photosensitizers utilizing the biipo ligand were thoroughly studied using various spectroscopic methods. Results showed differences in characteristics between the Ru(II) and Cu(I) complexes, despite both involving the same lowest electronically excited states. The emissive (MLCT)-M-3 state and the dark (LC)-L-3 state were found to be populated in both complexes, with a balance between the two states that can be tuned by altering the metal center or thermal energy.

Status report on copper (I) complexes in photoredox catalysis; photophysical and electrochemical properties and future prospects

Christian Sandoval-Pauker et al.

Summary: Visible-light photoredox catalysis has become a practical tool in recent years for driving energy-demanding chemical reactions. Despite the drawbacks of classical octahedral ruthenium and iridium complexes, such as sustainability and costs, they still dominate the field of photoredox catalysis due to their exceptional photoelectrochemical properties. Luminescent Cu (I) complexes are considered promising candidates to replace traditional Ru- and Ir photoredox catalysts in the near future. This review covers the development of Cu(I) complexes for photoredox catalysis, focusing on their characteristics, advantages, drawbacks, applications, and strategies for controlling their properties. Incorporating carbon-donor ligands has shown to be a promising approach for enhancing the stability and properties of photoredox catalysts.
