Effect of Wettability on Two-Phase Flow Through Granular Porous Media: Fluid Rupture and Mechanics of the Media

Mehryar Amir Hosseini et al.

Summary: The wettability of porous media significantly impacts the spatial distribution of fluid phases. Computer simulations show that contact angle affects particle dynamics, fluid velocity, and rupture in the pore space. Additionally, increasing contact angle reduces inter-particle interactions and increases drag force, leading to larger particle displacement.

New insights into effect of the electrostatic properties on the interfacial behavior of asphaltene and resin: An experimental study of molecular structure

Alireza Tajikmansori et al.

Summary: This study examines the effect of physicochemical properties of asphaltenes and resins and the concentration and type of dissolved ions on interfacial interactions. It was found that resin molecules quickly occupy the interface due to their smaller size. The activity of negative polar sites on the asphaltene and resin structure was higher than positive sites, highlighting the importance of cations in interfacial mechanisms. Different ions in solution had varying effects on the interfacial tension of resin and asphaltene fractions.

Wettability alteration by surface adsorption of asphaltene molecular in carbonate porous media

Jaber Taheri-Shakib et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of four asphaltene samples on the wettability alteration of carbonate reservoir rock. The wettability of each core is evaluated using relative permeability and contact angle. The composition of asphaltene affects the degree of wettability, and sulfur and oxygen play important roles in the adsorption properties of asphaltene. The relationship between surface wettability and electrostatic properties is also explored, and calcium is found to be correlated with the level of surface wettability. Scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis are used to study the dispersion of elements on the surface after wettability alteration.

A molecular insight into cracking of the asphaltene hydrocarbons by using microwave radiation in the presence of the nanoparticles acting as catalyst

Saeed Karami et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the microwave-assisted catalytic cracking of asphaltene using nanoparticles as a nanocatalyst. The study demonstrates that the presence of ZnO and Al2O3 nanoparticles enables the slight cracking of aromatic fused rings and reduces the average carbon number of aliphatic chains in the asphaltene. Furthermore, the microwave radiation in the presence of nanoparticles leads to a significant reduction in the concentrations of Vanadium and Nickel in the asphaltene. The results also suggest that the reduced electrostatic forces and hydrogen interactions contribute to the lower tendency of treated asphaltene to aggregate.

Evolution of adsorbed layers of asphaltenes at oil-water interfaces: A novel experimental protocol

Sefatallah Ashoorian et al.

Summary: This study introduces novel experimental protocols to investigate the evolution of adsorbed asphaltene layer to a film of aggregates at a model oil/water interface by means of dynamic interfacial tension (IFT) and dilational surface rheology measurements. It is found that the transformation of an asphaltene adsorbed layer to a rigid film depends not only on asphaltene concentration but also on aging time and interfacial area perturbations. These findings suggest that standard deviation from Young-Laplace shape fitting can be a rigorous parameter to reveal the properties of the interfacial asphaltene film, which cannot be recognized by regular IFT measurements.
