Azobenzene-based Photochromic Delivery Vehicles for Ions and Small Molecules

Munshi Sahid Hossain et al.

Summary: Molecular switches that operate with light are ideal candidates for delivery vehicles due to their reversibility and the ability to be operated using light. These switchable systems have significant differences in structural features and electronic properties between their two states. By utilizing light-driven alterations of structural features, these switchable host molecules can achieve differential molecular recognition. This review discusses the use of such supramolecular systems as delivery vehicles for ions and molecules, covering the development from 2001 to 2022 and providing insights into the past background and future prospects of the field.

Photoresponsive Dissipative Macrocycles Using Visible-Light-Switchable Azobenzenes

Esther Nieland et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of visible light to shift dynamic covalent imine assemblies out of equilibrium. A fluorinated azobenzene building block was combined with different amines to create a library of imine macrocycles. The chiral amine provides access to a rich network of macrocycles that undergo isomerisation and interconversion between different species.

Host-Guest Complexation of Cucurbit[7]Uril and Cucurbit[8]Uril with the Antineoplastic and Multiple Sclerosis Agent Mitoxantrone (Novantrone)

Valya Nikolova et al.

Summary: The interactions between neutral/protonated mitoxantrone and cucurbit[n]uril (n = 7, 8) host systems were analyzed using density functional theory calculations. It was found that stable inclusion complexes can form between doubly and quadruply charged mitoxantrone molecules and CB[7] or CB[8] in a water solvent. Both CB[7] and CB[8] show properties that are useful for drug delivery.

Selective Separation of Phenanthrene from Aromatic Isomer Mixtures by a Water-Soluble Azobenzene-Based Macrocycle

Yuezhou Liu et al.

Summary: A light-responsive water-soluble azobenzene-based macrocycle was synthesized and successfully employed in separating PHE from anthracene via a solid-liquid extraction method at ambient conditions. After five extraction cycles, the average purity for PHE reached about 91.1% and the macrocycle could be reused at least five times without significant reduction in separation performance. This work not only provides a new and clean way to separate PHE, but also advances the application of host-guest chemistry.

Fluorinated Azobenzenes Switchable with Red Light

Anna-Lena Leistner et al.

Summary: Fluorinated azobenzenes demonstrated efficient E -> Z photoisomerization with red light upon conjugation with unsaturated substituents, leading to the reversible change in viscosity of a supramolecular material under physiological conditions. This observation may pave the way for the design of new photopharmacology agents or phototriggered materials for in vivo use.

Water and the Cation-π Interaction

Yujie Zhu et al.

Summary: The study compared the relative contributions of cation-pi interaction and the hydrophobic effect to the binding of molecular guests in synthetic container hosts in water. The results showed that the container molecules preferred binding to the uncharged tert-butyl groups, indicating a stronger interaction compared to cation-pi interactions.

Photoresponsive Amide-Based Derivatives of Azobenzene-4,4′-Dicarboxylic Acid-Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Natalia Lukasik et al.

Summary: Azobenzene derivatives are important molecular switches for biological and material science applications. This study synthesized and characterized two novel amides containing photoresponsive azobenzene units, investigating their photochemical properties through experimental and theoretical methods. The compounds underwent trans to cis isomerization under UV light, with quantum yields and reaction kinetics also analyzed. The presence of selected ions was found to influence the thermal relaxation and half-life time of the cis form.

The effect of solvent on the binding of anions and ion-pairs with a neutral [2]rotaxane

Ricardo Molina-Muriel et al.

Summary: In this study, the binding properties of rotaxane 1 towards tetraalkylammonium salts of Cl-, OCN- and NO3- anions in different solvents were investigated using H-1 NMR titrations and ITC experiments. The binding constants in acetone were found to be significantly higher than those in chloroform, indicating the importance of solvation/desolvation processes. In a solvent mixture of CHCl3/MeOH, the addition of methanol reduced the binding constants, highlighting the impact of solvent composition on the binding processes.
