DFT Study of the Structural Stability, Electronic, Magnetic, and Elastic Properties of the Binary Intermetallic Compounds AB2 (A = Ti, Zr; B = Cr, Mn and Fe)

Murad Murad et al.

Summary: Laves phase binary intermetallics AB(2) (A = Ti, Zr; B = Cr, Mn, and Fe) were studied using hybrid density functional theory (HF-DFT). The calculated structural properties were in agreement with experimental observations. The compounds were found to be stable in C15 Laves phase based on cohesive energy (E-coh), formation enthalpy (?H), and elastic properties. The electronic band profiles and electrical resistivity (?) confirmed the metallic nature of these compounds, with ZrMn2 exhibiting good conductivity. Post-DFT treatment revealed ferromagnetism (FM) in TiFe2, ZrMn2, and ZrFe2, antiferromagnetism (AFM) in ZrCr2, and paramagnetism (PM) in TiCr2 and TiMn2. The elastic parameters indicated that all the intermetallics were ductile, incompressible, and elastically anisotropic.

Just shake or stir. About the simplest solution for the activation and hydrogenation of an FeTi hydrogen storage alloy

Abhishek Kumar Patel et al.

Summary: FeTi alloys are important low-temperature hydrogen storage alloys due to their high capacity and low price. This paper introduces a newly discovered process called self-shearing reactive milling (SSRM), which simplifies the activation process and achieves full hydrogenation of FeTi alloys through intense movement of particles. This process exposes a fresh active alloy surface, allowing hydrogen absorption without thermal treatment or evacuation.

How Green Are the National Hydrogen Strategies?

Wenting Cheng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates and analyzes the green level of national hydrogen strategies, and proposes a classification system accordingly. The study finds that most national strategies fall into the category of scale first and clean later. The article also identifies challenges for enhancing the regulatory stringency for green hydrogen.

Hydrogen Energy Demand Growth Prediction and Assessment (2021-2050) Using a System Thinking and System Dynamics Approach

Talal Yusaf et al.

Summary: Adopting hydrogen energy as an alternative to fossil fuels is a crucial step in reducing carbon emissions and meeting energy needs. However, there are potential environmental challenges in the production, distribution, and usage of hydrogen, particularly in fuel cells and combustion pathways. This study utilizes systems thinking and system dynamics approaches to construct a conceptual model and assess the potential unintended consequences and interventions for hydrogen energy, highlighting its potential growth by 2050. The results indicate that the combustion pathway may pose risks due to the production of NOx, a key air pollutant, which could limit its application without interventions. The study also predicts a potential increase in global hydrogen demand by 2050, depending on different scenarios.

Importance of the Hubbard U parameter to explore accurate electronic and optical behaviour of BiFeO3

Supriya Ghosal et al.

Summary: Based on the Hubbard U corrected density functional theory, this study critically explores the electronic and optical responses of multiferroic Bismuth ferrite. By considering the Hubbard U parameter for Fe-3d states as well as O-2p states, accurate band gap description and optical characteristics of BFO are obtained. Crystal field transitions of Fe3+ ions are found to explain the multiple transitions observed in the absorption spectra, supporting the accuracy of the DFT + U approach.

An effective activation method for industrially produced TiFeMn powder for hydrogen storage

David Michael Dreistadt et al.

Summary: This work proposes an effective thermal activation method for industrially produced titanium-iron-manganese powders for hydrogen storage. It is found that lower temperatures and larger particle sizes lead to better activation performance. The proposed method overcomes the diffusion barrier of the oxide layer, resulting in faster sorption kinetics.

Reaction pathways in the solid state and the Hubbard U correction

Joshua J. Brown et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the Hubbard U correction can significantly affect the migration barrier energies in transition metal oxide semiconductors, depending on the occupation of the transition metal d orbitals. This correction led to sudden increases in barrier energies in both SrTiO3 and ZnO, presenting important limitations for modeling reactive pathways in solid state materials using GGA DFT.

Surface Properties of LaNi5 and TiFe-Future Opportunities of Theoretical Research in Hydrides

Zbigniew Lodziana

Summary: Hydrogen in solid state compounds is considered a safe method of energy storage, but the ultimate materials for this purpose remain unknown. Theoretical investigations based on quantum mechanics have a well-established position, but their application for design of new alloys for reversible hydrogen storage is rare. Mainstream research focuses on predicting thermodynamic and structural properties of hydrides, while kinetic effects related to hydrogen transport present challenges that cannot be easily automated.

C-doped TiO2(B): A density functional theory characterization

Herman Heffner et al.

Summary: Research findings show that the doping of C atoms in TiO2(B) leads to the emergence of impurity states, a significant decrease in the band gap energy, and an enhanced ability to absorb visible and infrared spectra. Doping with C@Ti not only changes the structural arrangement around the impurity, but also exhibits different electronic and optical behaviors compared to the pure TiO2(B) model.
