An updated prevalence of asthma, its phenotypes, and the identification of the potential asthma risk factors among young Chinese adults recruited in Singapore

Qi Yi Ambrose Wong et al.

Summary: The study found that the lifetime asthma prevalence rate among young Chinese adults in Singapore was 19.1%, while the current asthma prevalence rate was 6.3%. Parental history of asthma was identified as the most important risk factor, and increased consumption of certain foods and television/computer usage were also associated with asthma risk. Future research should consider the interaction between various factors to better understand the impact of environment and lifestyle on asthma.

Summary: The Asia-Pacific region shows variations in prevalence rates of allergic diseases, with even slight increases translating into overwhelming numbers of patients due to its large population. As urbanization and industrialization progress, measures must be taken to reduce the magnitude of future allergy epidemics.

An update on the prevalence, chronicity, and severity of atopic dermatitis and the associated epidemiological risk factors in the Singapore/Malaysia Chinese young adult population: A detailed description of the Singapore/Malaysia Cross-Sectional Genetics Epidemiology Study (SMCGES) cohort

Jun Jie Lim et al.

Summary: Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a common skin condition influenced by multiple genes and environmental triggers. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological status of AD among young adults in Singapore and Malaysia, evaluate associated risk factors, and describe the disease presentation and symptoms profile. The results showed that family history, personal history of allergies, and various lifestyle and environmental factors were significantly associated with AD occurrence, chronicity, and severity.

Allergic rhinitis in Chinese young adults from the Singapore/Malaysia cross-sectional genetics epidemiology study (SMCGES) cohort: Prevalence, patterns, and epidemiology of allergic rhinitis

Qi Yi Ambrose Wong et al.

Summary: This study found an increase in AR prevalence over time in Asia. Factors such as male gender, parental history of allergic diseases increased the risk of AR, while factors like age, housing type, income level, pet ownership, sedentary lifestyle, and dietary habits were associated with AR. The study identified modifiable risk factors such as TV/computer usage and dietary habits that may impact AR manifestation, opening up new avenues for research in gene-environment interactions and AR management.

Advances in asthma: New understandings of asthma's natural history, risk factors, underlying mechanisms, and clinical management

Rachel L. Miller et al.

Summary: In the past two years, there has been significant growth in high-quality asthma research, leading to new understandings of asthma incidence, natural history, risk factors, and potential therapeutic interventions. The progress in understanding mechanisms of asthma development and exacerbations, as well as advancements in diagnostic tools and precision approaches, have been immense and impactful. Though further knowledge on novel therapeutics and different asthma phenotypes is needed, these recent advancements offer promising avenues for future asthma management.

Sensitization to Airborne Fungal Allergens Associates with Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis Presentation and Severity in the Singaporean/Malaysian Population

Yang Yie Sio et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant role of fungal sensitization in the manifestation of asthma and allergic rhinitis in the Southeast Asian Chinese population. Sensitization to Curvularia lunata was found to be associated with increased risk of asthma and allergic rhinitis. Additionally, sensitization to Aspergillus spp. was the most common fungal sensitization, with higher sIgE titers correlated with increased risk of allergic rhinitis.

Long-chain saturated fatty acids in breast milk are associated with the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis via induction of inflammatory ILC3s

Weng Sheng Kong et al.

Summary: Breastfeeding influences the immune system development in infants, and the presence of long-chain saturated fatty acids in breast milk may lead to inflammatory reactions in the infant's gut, potentially triggering the onset of atopic dermatitis later in life.

Atopy: A Collection of Comorbid Conditions

Natalie M. Diaz-Cabrera et al.

Summary: The concept of atopy was developed in the early 20th century based on clinical observations without knowledge of pathogenic mechanisms. It involves a collection of comorbidities that share pathogenic features, and understanding the relationships between these conditions is crucial for improving patient care. Specialized in Allergy and Immunology focus on managing the comorbidities of atopy, and better understanding their connections can enhance patient care.
