Generation of reproducible model freshwater particulate matter analogues to study the interaction with particulate contaminants

Helene Walch et al.

Summary: Aquatic fate models and risk assessment require experimental information on the potential of contaminants to interact with riverine suspended particulate matter (SPM). However, the assumption of chemical equilibrium is invalid for particulate contaminants, and their interactions with SPM are governed by physicochemical forces between contaminant-particle and SPM surfaces. Therefore, the availability of a standard SPM material is highly relevant for the development of reproducible test systems to evaluate the fate of particulate contaminants in aquatic systems.

Nanoplastics: From model materials to colloidal fate

Stephanie Reynaud et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics, pieces of plastic debris of mixed shape and chemical composition, can be found in various environments with little known about their prevalence and potential risks to living organisms. Presented as colloids, their fate is determined by interfacial properties, Trojan horse properties, and stability in aqueous media, while their hazards remain largely unknown.

The effect of ionic strength, pH and natural organic matter on heteroaggregation of CeO2 nanoparticles with montmorillonite clay minerals

Sujin Bae et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aggregation behavior of CeO2 nanoparticles in aquatic environments, focusing on the effects of pH and natural organic matter (NOM). The presence of negatively charged montmorillonite clay minerals reduced the stability of positively charged CeO2 nanoparticles through heteroaggregation at low pH. However, both montmorillonite and CeO2 nanoparticles were negatively charged at high pH, resulting in stable mixtures. The presence of humic acid stabilized the systems against aggregation. These findings emphasize the importance of considering the complex interactions between engineered nanoparticles, natural colloids, and NOM for understanding their fate and transport in realistic aquatic environments.

Freshwater suspended particulate matter-Key components and processes in floc formation and dynamics

Helene Walch et al.

Summary: Freshwater suspended particulate matter (SPM) is composed of complex floc-like aggregate structures, consisting of minerals and organic matter. These aggregates provide habitat for microbes, serve as food for larger organisms, and play a significant role in carbon and nutrient cycles. The composition, structure, size, and concentration of SPM flocs can vary spatially and temporally.

Impact of montmorillonite clay on the homo- and heteroaggregation of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2) in synthetic and natural waters

Junyu Wang et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the effects of pH, electrolytes, natural organic matter (NOM), and montmorillonite on the homo- and heteroaggregation of nTiO(2), finding that the addition of NOM effectively reduces the aggregation of nTiO(2 while the presence of montmorillonite affects the aggregation behavior of nTiO(2).
